Former U.S. senator Ben Sasse shared heartbreaking news this week, revealing that he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer and does not expect to survive the disease. Yet in a candid and deeply personal message, Sasse pointed not to despair, but to his faith in Jesus Christ, describing a hope rooted not in optimism or sentiment, but in what he called “a real Deliverer.”<\/p>\n

In a post shared on X, Sasse spoke candidly about his prognosis. “Last week I was diagnosed with metastasized, stage-four pancreatic cancer, and am gonna die,” he wrote, acknowledging the severity of the diagnosis while reflecting on the reality that mortality comes for everyone. “Advanced pancreatic is nasty stuff; it’s a death sentence. But I already had a death sentence before last week, too \u2014 we all do.”<\/p>\n

Rather than softening the language, Sasse leaned into the gravity of the moment, describing death as “a wicked thief” that pursues all people. Still, he emphasized his gratitude for the relationships that have sustained him, particularly those with his siblings, close friends, and family. He spoke tenderly of his wife, Melissa, and their three children \u2014 daughters Corrie and Alex, and their 14-year-old son, Breck \u2014 expressing pride in their lives and accomplishments and deep appreciation for the time they share.<\/p>\n

“I couldn’t be more grateful to constantly get to bear-hug this motley crew of sinners and saints,” Sasse wrote, capturing both the love and the broken beauty of family life. His words reflected a man fully aware of what he stands to lose \u2014 future milestones, shared celebrations, and everyday moments that now feel especially precious.<\/p>\n

Sasse noted that receiving such a diagnosis during the Advent season carries particular weight. Advent, he explained, is not about shallow positivity or vague spirituality, but about orienting the heart toward a hope strong enough to withstand real suffering. “Often we lazily say ‘hope’ when what we mean is ‘optimism,'” he wrote. While optimism has its place, Sasse said, it collapses under the weight of telling children their father will not walk them down the aisle or parents that they will bury their son.<\/p>\n

For Sasse, Christian hope is something far sturdier. It is a hope that can be proclaimed even while walking in darkness \u2014 sometimes, he said, with a “gravelly voice soldiering through tears.” That hope, he explained, is anchored in the incarnation of Christ: a rescuing God who entered history at a real time and place and who offers redemption that stretches beyond death itself.<\/p>\n

“We hope in a real Deliverer,” Sasse wrote, pointing to Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s promise. While that promise does not erase present pain or suffering, he said, it reframes it within the larger story of eternity. The “eternal city \u2014 with foundations and without cancer \u2014 is not yet,” but it is real, and it is coming.<\/p>\n

Despite the terminal nature of his diagnosis, Sasse made clear that he is not surrendering passively. He plans to pursue available cancer treatments and is, in his words, “not going down without a fight.” Still, his focus remains fixed on what matters most as his family prepares for both treatment and the Christmas holiday. He closed his message by offering a blessing of peace, quoting Isaiah 9: “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light\u2026 For to us a son is given.”<\/p>\n

The diagnosis casts a somber shadow over the life of a public servant who represented Nebraska in the U.S. Senate from 2015 to 2023 and later served as president of the University of Florida. Known for his emphasis on faith, constitutional principles, and the idea that Christians are ultimately citizens of a heavenly kingdom, Sasse has long spoken about life as a kind of exile, with true belonging found not in earthly power but in the Kingdom of God.<\/p>\n
