Emma Heming Willis is opening up about one of the hardest choices she\u2019s had to make as her husband, Bruce Willis, battles frontotemporal dementia (FTD).<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with People<\/em>, Emma explained that Bruce has moved into his own nearby home where he can have the calm and serene atmosphere needed for his health. \u201cIt was the hardest thing,\u201d she admitted. His diagnosis \u201crequires a calm and serene atmosphere,\u201d and separating the family\u2019s spaces was the only way to make that possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have two young children, and it was just important that they had a home that supported their needs and that Bruce could have a place that supported his needs,\u201d Emma said. \u201cThe kids can have playdates and sleepovers [again] and not have to walk around tiptoeing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emma first revealed the decision in August during the ABC special Emma & Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey<\/em>, calling it one of \u201cthe hardest decisions\u201d she\u2019s faced since his diagnosis in February 2023.<\/p>\n

Her honesty sparked backlash online, which led her to address critics in an Instagram video. She reminded people that \u201ceven if someone is familiar with dementia, they do not understand the inner workings of any specific situation and they don\u2019t know how your person is behaving or your family dynamics.\u201d<\/p>\n

She echoed the same thought to People<\/em>: \u201cDementia plays out differently in everyone\u2019s home\u201d and families need to do \u201cwhat\u2019s right for your family dynamic.\u201d She admitted, \u201cIt\u2019s heartbreaking to me. But this is how we were able to support our whole family, [and] it has opened up Bruce\u2019s world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though Bruce lives with round-the-clock caregivers in his new home, the family remains closely connected. Emma said she visits every morning and evening, describing the house as their \u201csecond home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI get to go back to being Bruce\u2019s wife and the kids can be kids and there\u2019s beauty in that, and I\u2019m so grateful for that,\u201d she said. \u201cI just get to be with him in these moments and that is because of this set-up we have. It\u2019s been helpful for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emma also shared that Bruce\u2019s relationship with their two daughters, Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, remains strong. \u201cThis is what Bruce would want for our daughters,\u201d she told Diane Sawyer earlier. He would want them to live in a home \u201ctailored to their needs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even Bruce\u2019s ex-wife, Demi Moore, has publicly praised Emma\u2019s strength. Speaking on “The Oprah Podcast,” Moore said she has \u201cso much compassion for her,\u201d adding, \u201cThere is no road map for how to deal with this. So much fell on Emma to really figure this whole thing out. And the most beautiful thing, and she talks about this in the book, was recognizing the importance for caregivers that they have to take care of themselves. If they don\u2019t put that time into making sure that they\u2019re OK, then they can\u2019t show up for anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Emma, the journey is far from easy, but her commitment shines through.
