Dick Vitale recently underwent successful surgery to remove cancerous lymph nodes from his neck just four days after the longtime ESPN college basketball commentator announced that he was battling cancer again. Vitale wrote in a post on X, \u201cI\u2019m in recovery after my surgery & the surgeon Dr Vosler removed the Lymph node that was cancerous & surrounding lymph nodes which he sent for a pathology report he stated &\u00a0 was pleased with what took place. Once again, THANKS for all of your prayers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 85-year-old shared that he was dealing with his fourth battle with cancer since first being diagnosed in 2021. Vitale then wrote on X, \u201cWith all the [prayer emojis] I have received & the loving support of my family, friends & @espn\u00a0 colleagues, I\u00a0 will win this battle. Surgery on Tues. will be a success.\u00a0 Thanks for All the prayers.\u201d In December, Vitale had said\u00a0he was cancer-free<\/a>\u00a0after a five-month battle with vocal cord cancer.\u00a0\u201cI have heard from many cancer patients that say it is the most nervous time waiting for the call with the news,\u201d Vitale wrote on X at the time.<\/p>\n

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer\u2019s first confrontation with cancer came in 2021 when he was diagnosed with melanoma and, later that year, lymphoma.\u00a0In November 2021,\u00a0Vitale made an emotional return\u00a0to the announcing chair, his first broadcast since his first cancer diagnosis. \u201cI can\u2019t believe I\u2019m sitting here,\u201d Vitale said, fighting back tears. \u201cThis is really a big thrill for me. I want to thank all who sent me so many great messages, [ESPN president] Jimmy Pitaro, and all my buddies at ESPN. I want to thank certainly my family and all the fans. My, you have been unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n
