The actor shared his journey to sobriety over the past 33 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CsE2Y_1vE-e\/\">writing in an Instagram post<\/a>, \u201c33 years ago today, I found my recovery and a tribe that has sustained me on my incredible, grateful journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cMy life is full of love, family, God, opportunity, friends, work, dogs, and fun.\u201d Lowe concluded his post by saying, \u201cIf you or someone you know is struggling with any form of addiction: hope and joy are waiting if you want it and are willing to work for it.\u201d His message was well-received, bringing hundreds of thousands of likes from Chris Pratt, Jennifer Aniston, and Paris Hilton.<\/p>\n<p>Lowe\u2019s children were also quick to comment with their support, with the actor\u2019s oldest son Matthew commenting, \u201cIt works if you work!\u201d His other son, John Owen, couldn\u2019t help but make fun of his father, saying, \u201cProud of your recovery, opposite feeling about this selfie,\u201d mocking Lowe\u2019s shirtless pose in the water. John Owen\u2019s frequent mocking of his father\u2019s social media inspired their new Netflix show, \u201cUnstable,\u201d which both men star in.<\/p>\n<p>John Owen, who is also sober, received his five-year sobriety chip from his father during an appearance on \u201cThe Drew Barrymore Show.\u201d John Owen recently discussed his father with <em>People Magazine<\/em>, saying, \u201cOn the most personal level possible, when I was struggling with addiction, he was always there for me. I credit that with being one, if not the main, reason I\u2019m sober and living a healthy lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lO_7EJ5vs-0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He also received admiration from his longtime friend Gwyneth Paltrow. She commented, \u201cWe are so proud of you. We love you so much.\u201d Lowe has always been transparent in his recovery, admitting he\u00a0hit rock bottom\u00a0at 26 after ignoring a heartbreaking phone call from his mother. He returned home from partying to find out that his mother left him a message on his answering machine, begging him to pick up the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Lowe\u2019s grandfather suffered a heart attack, but he chose not to answer. He said of the moment, \u201cI remember going into the bathroom, looking at myself in the mirror, and my thought process was, \u2018You need to drink directly from this bottle of Cuervo Gold so you can go to sleep, so you can wake up, so you can deal with this.\u2019 Out of all the things that had gone on in my life, that was the thing where finally I went, \u2018This is no way to live.\u2019 I went to rehab 48 hours later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Choosing sobriety is never easy, and staying sober is even more challenging. However, Rob Lowe has remained sober for 33 years, inspiring his loved ones along the way. While dealing with his sobriety, John Owen has had the best supporter who knows his struggles. Everyone has had moments where they\u2019ve hit rock bottom, but the best part about it is that you can only go up from there.
