Nearly one year after announcing his battle with aphasia, Bruce Willis received a \u201ccruel\u201d diagnosis. In a lengthy statement, the Willis family shared that he now has frontotemporal dementia. The family said the diagnosis is painful, but having a clear diagnosis is a relief.<\/p>\n

The statement continues, \u201cFTD is a cruel disease that many of us have never heard of and can strike anyone. For people under 60, FTD is the most common form of dementia, and because getting the diagnosis can take years, FTD is likely much more prevalent than we know.\u201d The statement also says there aren\u2019t any treatments for the disease, but they hope that will change in the future. The family emphasized that any media attention should focus on educating the public about the disease, which needs research and awareness as Bruce\u2019s condition advances.<\/p>\n

The statement, signed by Demi Moore, Emma Heming and his daughters,<\/a> also stated that if Willis could talk about his situation, he would want to raise awareness and bring \u201cglobal attention and connectedness\u201d to others suffering from FTD. The statement concludes, \u201cBruce has always found joy in life and has helped everyone he knows to do the same. It has meant the world to see that sense of care echoed back to him and all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The family shared that they\u2019ve been moved by the love and support everyone has shared for Willis during this challenging time, saying, \u201cYour continued compassion, understanding, and respect will enable us to help Bruce live as full a life as possible.\u201d According to the Mayo Clinic, Willis\u2019 initial aphasia diagnosis indicated that he would struggle to write, speak, and understand language. However, despite his struggles, Willis continued to make public appearances and enjoy spontaneous jam sessions.<\/p>\n

After his initial diagnosis, Willis\u2019 current wife, Emma Heming, shared that she was dealing with \u201cparalyzing grief.\u201d She wrote on social media, \u201cI\u2019m learning how to live alongside it.\u201d Hemming shared bits of wisdom from Willis\u2019 daughter Scout, writing, \u201cGrief is the deepest and purest form of love. I hope you find some comfort in that too.\u201d<\/p>\n
