Chris Hemsworth\u00a0is stepping back from acting after discovering he\u2019s genetically predisposed to develop Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n

The actor discovered the news while filming the fifth episode of his Disney+ series \u201cLimitless<\/a>,\u201d in which he meets with a doctor and discovers he has a genetic predisposition for the progressive disease that destroys memory and other essential mental functions.<\/p>\n

Hemsworth\u2019s DNA contains two copies of the APOE4 gene, making his chance of developing the progressive neurologic disorder eight to 10 times higher than the average person\u2019s.<\/p>\n

He told\u00a0Vanity Fair<\/a>\u00a0in an article published last Thursday that after learning the news, he plans to pause his work after wrapping up his press tour for the documentary series.<\/p>\n

The 39-year-old\u2019s grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s, and he told Vanity Fair a bit more about it. \u201cI\u2019m not sure he actually remembers much anymore, and he slips in and out of Dutch, which is his original language,\u201d Hemsworth said. \u201cHe\u2019ll be talking [in] Dutch and English and then a mash-up and then maybe some other new words as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Australian actor revealed that filming the episode about such a heavy topic made him realize he\u2019s \u201cnot ready to go yet.\u201d The genetic revelation also led to him meeting with death doulas for the series\u2019 final episode.<\/p>\n

Though Hemsworth said, \u201cit\u2019s not like I\u2019ve been handed my resignation,\u201d he admitted the culmination of experiences gave him the nudge to take time off from acting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really triggered something in me to want to take some time off,\u201d Hemsworth said. \u201cAnd since we finished the show, I\u2019ve been completing the things I was already contracted to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

The star has already wrapped up production on his upcoming movies: Netflix\u2019s \u201cExtraction 2\u201d and George Miller\u2019s \u201cMad Max: Fury Road\u201d prequel \u201cFuriosa.\u201d He added, \u201cNow, when I finish this tour this week, I\u2019m going home, and I\u2019m going to have a good chunk of time off and just simplify. Be with the kids, be with my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hemsworth and his wife, Elsa Pataky, 46, share three children: 10-year-old India and 8-year-old twins Sasha and Tristan. The father-of-three went on to share that Disney presented him a version of \u201cLimitless\u201d sans the diagnosis, but he was firm about keeping the full version.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, if this is a motivator for people to take better care of themselves and also understand that there are steps you can take \u2014 then fantastic,\u201d Hemsworth said.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cMy concern was I just didn\u2019t want to manipulate it and overdramatize it and make it into some sort of hokey grab at empathy or whatever for entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hemsworth, who has suited up in over eight Marvel Cinematic Universe films as the hammer-wielding God of Thunder, also shared in the interview that he\u2019s\u00a0\u201ccompletely open to\u201d<\/a>\u00a0revisiting the titular character at some point. On playing Thor, Hemsworth said, \u201cI\u2019ve always loved the experience. I\u2019ve been very thankful I\u2019ve been able to do something different each time.\u201d<\/p>\n
