I went backpacking<\/strong> last weekend with some friends. At dusk, a smattering of bats came out, fluttering above the firelight.<\/p>\n

I told my kids about it in the car yesterday, while driving home from dinner.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Son:<\/strong> “Really? There were bats?”<\/p>\n

Me:<\/strong> “Yep.”<\/p>\n

Son, to my daughter:<\/strong> “See?!? Bats are real!”<\/p>\n

Daughter:<\/strong> “I know<\/em>. Who said they weren’t real?”<\/p>\n

Son:<\/strong> “You did.”<\/p>\n

Daughter:<\/strong> “You were talking about vampire<\/em> bats.”<\/p>\n

Me:<\/strong> “But those are real, too.<\/p>\n

Daughter:<\/strong> “They are<\/em>?”<\/p>\n

Me:<\/strong> “They live in Mexico and suck the blood of cows.”<\/p>\n

Son:<\/strong> “Like mosquitoes.”<\/p>\n

Me:<\/strong> “Right. But they don’t turn into real vampires.”<\/p>\n

Son:<\/strong> “Too bad.”<\/p>\n
