Kennedy and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., or the Challenger explosion.<br \/>\nFor millions, a mild September morning nine years ago also became a seminal moment in American history. Saturday marks the ninth anniversary of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/Inspiration\/2007\/01\/911-index-page.aspx\">attacks<\/a> at the Pentagon and in New York City and the plane crash in Pennsylvania.<br \/>\nThe anniversary occurs at the end of the Islamic holy month of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/Faiths\/Islam\/Ramadan.aspx\">Ramadan<\/a> and during the Jewish <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/Faiths\/Judaism\/High-Holidays.aspx\">High Holy Days<\/a>. It is also is occurring amid renewed peace talks in the Middle East and growing hostility between Muslims and non-Muslims as evidenced by tensions over mosque expansion and construction projects in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/News\/Hot-Topics\/Ground-Zero-Mosque.aspx\">Manhattan<\/a> and across the country and a proposed Quran burning initially scheduled for Saturday.<br \/>\nBut many people from military and religious leaders to fellow citizens such as a <a href=\"http:\/\/community.beliefnet.com\/nancy_shehata\/blog\/2010\/09\/09\/on_911,_millions_of_americans_will_not_be_burning_the_quran\">Muslim Beliefnet member<\/a> are calling for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/Entertainment\/Movies\/World-Trade-Center\/2001\/10\/911-Splash-Page.aspx\">religious tolerance<\/a>, unity amid the current strained climate.<br \/>\nThe Sept. 11 anniversary is a day of remembrance and service, President Obama said Friday.
