On “Larry King Live” Tuesday night, syndicated radio talk show host Laura Schlessinger announced she would not renew her contract<\/a> before it expires this year and end her “Dr. Laura” radio show.
\n“I want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry — some special interest group deciding this is a time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates and sponsors,” she told King as she announced ending her 30-year career on talk radio.
\nIn recent days, the radio personality has come under attack for racially charged comments she made to a caller deemed hypersensitive to racism. Last week, her repeated use of a racial slur to a caller who identified herself as a black woman married to a white man sparked criticism and calls for Schlessinger’s ouster or boycotts as well as an apology. Last week, the conservative advice maven apologized on the air.
\n“During the on-air exchange, Schlessinger said the caller, who said she was black and married to a white man, was too sensitive for complaining that her husband’s friends made racist comments about her in their home,” the Associated Press reported Wednesday. “Schlessinger told King she ‘never called anybody a bad word’ and ‘wasn’t dissing anybody.'”
