General McInerney &#8212; somber, serious, and very authoritative looking &#8212;\u00a0warning\u00a0Fox News acolytes, er, viewers about the imminent Isis threat to the (non-existent) U.S. borders.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1098\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1098\" style=\"width: 355px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stevehendersonfineart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1098\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/362\/2014\/09\/ChickenLittle.jpg\" alt=\"chicken little cartoon by Steve Henderson\" width=\"355\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1098\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>What are we running from? Chicken Little cartoon by Steve Henderson.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Reminiscent of\u00a0Mel Gibson&#8217;s Hollywood line in the movie\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mTgO18G5zjI\">Signs<\/a>\u00a0(&#8220;It&#8217;s happening . . . &#8220;), McInerney read from his teleprompter, &#8220;Beware America: They are coming\u00a0for\u00a0us.&#8221; It&#8217;s difficult to tell which of the two &#8212; Gibson or McInerney &#8212; managed the better monotone.<\/p>\n<p>The response, to the sleeping Christian community on Facebook, was predictable:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Blessed Savior,&#8221; one woman wrote. &#8220;Come for us!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m so afraid!&#8221; another posted. &#8220;Sweet Jesus, save us now!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And while Jesus is on His way, whatever the government forces are wanting to do, do it, now, please, with Jesus&#8217; blessing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>A Media Monopoly<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>As a person who\u00a0eschews\u00a0corporate television news &#8212; CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, or Fox (it can&#8217;t bear too much repeating that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.storyleak.com\/graphic-6-corporations-own-90-percent-of-media\/\">six corporations own 90 percent of the media<\/a>\u00a0in the United States), I tend to think that people are more awake than they are, and the other day, asked the <a title=\"steve henderson\" href=\"http:\/\/stevehendersonfineart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Norwegian Artist<\/a>, Steve Henderson &#8212; &#8220;What percentage of the populace continues to accept, blindly, everything they are told on the evening news?&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1095\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1095\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stevehendersonfineart.com\/works\/850054\/ocean-breeze\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1095\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/362\/2014\/09\/OceanBreeze_watermark_SteveHenderson.jpg\" alt=\"Ocean Breeze inspirational oil painting of woman onocean beach at sunset with dress and fabric by Steve Henderson\" width=\"450\" height=\"376\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1095\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Whatever is true, right, honorable, beautiful &#8212; think of these things and escape the trap of fear. Ocean Breeze, original oil painting by Steve Henderson; licensed open edition print at Great Big Canvas, iCanvasART, and Framed Canvas Art.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Naively, because I read a lot of alternative news and encounter other versions than the officially sanctioned ones, I had thought that more people were waking up, but following this particular Facebook thread I realized that, among a certain segment of Christians (please God, let it not be too large) artless credulity reigns rampant.<\/p>\n<p>They believe everything they are told by sources they unquestioningly trust. And the result of that belief is not empowerment, but fear, something that\u00a0an actual\u00a0source of truth &#8212; the Bible &#8212; says we are not to allow to\u00a0rule our lives:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0(2 Timothy 1: 7)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>Armed with\u00a0Confidence<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Commonsense\u00a0dictates\u00a0that, when any people, household, group, or nation is facing a serious threat, the last thing you want is\u00a0for the populace to be\u00a0paralyzed\u00a0with fear. If you want to win the fight, you\u00a0arm\u00a0the populace\u00a0&#8212; with knowledge, insight, and actual weaponry\u00a0&#8212; because people will fight for what is dear to them. That&#8217;s what we were taught about the founding of the U.S. &#8212; that a militia of ordinary citizens fought and won the war &#8212; but for some reason, the solution today is to disarm, and dishearten,\u00a0us.<\/p>\n<p>The result is a hapless, helpless populace (with\u00a0far too many Christians reposting press releases), that wrings its hands and says,<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh dear, what can we do?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here are four things we can do:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>Stay Distant<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0<strong>Stop falling in love with people in uniform.<\/strong>\u00a0Or anyone who speaks authoritatively and with confidence. Not so long ago, a commander in chief looked the American public in the eye (on TV) and said, &#8220;I did not\u00a0have sexual relations\u00a0with that woman!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lest you think that lying is limited to one political party, another commander in chief told us, &#8220;Read my lips: no new taxes!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Do not call conspiracy everything that these people call conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0(Isaiah 8: 12)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1096\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1096\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stevehendersonfineart.com\/works\/1553712\/midday-tea\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1096\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/362\/2014\/09\/MiddayTea_watermark_SteveHenderson.jpg\" alt=\"Midday Tea inspirational oil painting of young woman in dining room of Victorian home by Steve Henderson\" width=\"450\" height=\"357\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1096\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The people we invite into our home &#8212; whether via TV or our kitchen door &#8212; are ones we trust and are happy to see. Midday Tea, original oil painting by Steve Henderson.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Do not assume that &#8220;these people&#8221; are Christians &#8212; and thereby speak in God&#8217;s name &#8212; simply because they say they are, they go to church, or they&#8217;re Republican\/conservative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>Be Skeptical<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0<strong>Quit believing everything you&#8217;re told.<\/strong>\u00a0On the news, in the classroom, from the pulpit, by the mayor.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0gospel author Luke\u00a0encourages\u00a0all Christians to be Bereans, a skeptical people of\u00a0<em>&#8220;noble character&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0who<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day\u00a0to\u00a0see if\u00a0what Paul said was true.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0(Acts 17: 11)<\/p>\n<p>If they acted this way with the apostle Paul &#8212; whose ethics and character were of a higher sort than most &#8212; then what should our attitude be toward politicians, businessmen, financiers, and media moguls whose central purpose in life is to turn a profit?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>Avoid Hypnosis<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0<strong>Turn off the TV.<\/strong>\u00a0It&#8217;s hypnotic, literally, and the time you spend staring, with glazed eyes, absorbing a well-written script could be more usefully invested in a brisk walk,\u00a0an afternoon\u00a0in the garden, a game of cards with your family, a serious session of knitting, reading a book &#8212; or checking out alternative news sites. There are more and more of them, and although there is no major Christian option, Fox News isn&#8217;t Christian either.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic\u00a0principles\u00a0of the world, rather than on Christ.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0(Colossians 2: 8)<\/p>\n<p>This doesn&#8217;t just refer to Biblical and church issues, but is a phenomenal description of today&#8217;s media-saturated cultural message.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>Seek God<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0<strong>Pray.<\/strong>\u00a0That&#8217;s our most powerful option as Christians.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than throw in the towel, saying, &#8220;The world is going to end anyway so there&#8217;s nothing we can do &#8212; Sweet Jesus!
