And whether we like it or not, the money<br \/>\nwe pay for their oil only makes them more powerful and more oppressive.<br \/>\nOil wealth allows undemocratic governments to crush dissent and to<br \/>\nsubjugate women. Other regimes use it to finance terrorists around the<br \/>\nworld and criminal syndicates in our own hemisphere.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Right on. However, the truth of the above has absolutely nothing to do with drilling in Alaska and everything to do with weaning ourselves from fossil fuels. Which is why <a href=\"http:\/\/my.barackobama.com\/page\/content\/newenergy\">Obama&#8217;s energy plan<\/a> makes more sense to me:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Within 10 years save more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela<br \/>\ncombined.<\/li>\n<li>Put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars &#8212; cars that can get up to 150<br \/>\nmiles per gallon &#8212; on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make<br \/>\nsure are built here in America.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by<br \/>\n2025.<\/li>\n<li>Implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/pdf\/factsheet_energy_speech_080308.pdf\">full plan is detailed here<\/a> (PDF)&nbsp; and it&#8217;s a lot more detailed and&nbsp; comprehensive than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/\/Informing\/Issues\/17671aa4-2fe8-4008-859f-0ef1468e96f4.htm\">McCain&#8217;s plan<\/a> &#8211; the latter puts a lot of emphasis on market-oriented solutions as expected, which are not convincing to me at all.
