{"id":661,"date":"2010-07-10T13:34:54","date_gmt":"2010-07-10T13:34:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/cityofbrass\/2010\/07\/photo-mike-tyson-at-mecca.html"},"modified":"2010-07-10T13:34:54","modified_gmt":"2010-07-10T13:34:54","slug":"photo-mike-tyson-at-mecca","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/cityofbrass\/2010\/07\/photo-mike-tyson-at-mecca.html","title":{"rendered":"PHOTO: Mike Tyson at Mecca"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Here I am during my journey to Mecca.  on Twitpic\" href=\"http:\/\/twitpic.com\/242wdv\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 5px 10px\" alt=\"Here I am during my journey to Mecca.  on Twitpic\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/twitpic.com\/show\/thumb\/242wdv.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had no idea that Mike Tyson was a muslim until I heard last week that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/afp\/article\/ALeqM5hC5AmECb4aYun7gokLKoUJIJyaYQ\">he had traveled to Mecca for <em>umrah<\/em><\/a> (the minor pilgrimage, identical to the Hajj except that <em>umrah<\/em> can be performed anytime during the year and does not fulfill the muslim&#8217;s religious obligation to perform Hajj at least once in a lifetime). <\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t give it much further thought until I saw <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/MikeTyson\/status\/18202678728\">via Twitter<\/a> that Tyson had actually posted <a href=\"http:\/\/twitpic.com\/242wdv\">a picture<\/a> of himself (at right, click to enlarge) in front of the Holy Ka&#8217;aba using Twitpic. The contrast of ancient tradition and modern social networking is actually <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/cityofbrass\/2009\/02\/reflections-on-technology-and.html\">old hat by now<\/a>; what really blows my mind is that this is Mike Tyson. The mere fact of him being there is sufficient to essentially erase any notions or opinions I had of him prior. <\/p>\n<p>I hope that the experience not only stays with him but also triggers <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/cityofbrass\/2008\/09\/warith-deen-mohammed-and-the-mounta.html\">the same deep self-reflection that it did for Malcolm X<\/a>.
