Naturally, they are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/2009\/01\/23\/opinion\/edmansour.php\">being persecuted for it &#8211; even in Egypt<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Many Americans do not realize that there is a war being<br \/>\nwaged in Egypt against Muslim reformers. These reformers call<br \/>\nthemselves &#8220;Koranists&#8221; because they focus solely on the Koran and<br \/>\nadvocate a modern interpretation of Islam that rejects Shariah law.<\/p>\n<p>These self-declared leaders of the &#8220;Islamic Reformation&#8221; number in<br \/>\nthe thousands and are connected globally through the Internet. For<br \/>\nnearly a decade, as this movement has gained momentum, they have come<br \/>\nunder increased attack from the Egyptian government for their religious<br \/>\nideas. Al Azhar University, which is based in Cairo and is the leading<br \/>\ncenter for conservative Sunni learning in the world, has rejected the<br \/>\nviews of the Koranists and has sought to systematically dismantle the<br \/>\nmovement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There is an <a href=\"http:\/\/talkislam.info\/2009\/01\/23\/egypt-ingratiates-itself-with-islamist-m\/\">interesting and vibrant discussion on the topic of Qur&#8217;anism over at Talk Islam<\/a>, including some actual Qur&#8217;anists themselves.
