{"id":23,"date":"2008-06-16T13:50:59","date_gmt":"2008-06-16T13:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/churchbasementroadshow\/2008\/06\/shabbat-lunch.html"},"modified":"2008-06-16T13:50:59","modified_gmt":"2008-06-16T13:50:59","slug":"shabbat-lunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/churchbasementroadshow\/2008\/06\/shabbat-lunch.html","title":{"rendered":"Shabbat Lunch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/churchbasementroadshow\/2008\/05\/the-church-basement-roadshow-s.html\">View the Tour Schedule Here<\/a><br \/>\nOn Saturday, after we groggily got up in the RV and packed everything up in Santa Monica, we drove into LA and lunched with our friends at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ikar-la.org\/\">IKAR Synagogue<\/a>.   <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ikar-la.org\/rabbi.html\">Sharon Brous<\/a>, the rabbi at IKAR (and interviewed by Krista Tippett <a href=\"http:\/\/speakingoffaith.publicradio.org\/programs\/daysofawe\/index.shtml\">here<\/a>) is a friend whom Doug and I met a couple years ago at an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Im-05dEUv_o\">innovative gathering<\/a> convened by <a href=\"http:\/\/synagogue3000.org\">Synagogue 3000<\/a>.<br \/>\nIKAR is generally recognized to be among the most innovative (aka, &#8220;emergent&#8221;) versions of American Judaism, and like emergent churches, is a beautiful admixture of paradoxical elements: a conservative synagogue, meeting in a community center, with a woman rabbi, and with a great emphasis on social justice.<br \/>\nI sat at lunch with long-time friends Shawn Landres and Josh Avedon, who have recently moved on from Synagogue 3000 to found their own organization, <a href=\"http:\/\/jewishjumpstart.org\">Jumpstart<\/a> (the website is, for now, just a placeholder). Their mission is to &#8220;develop, strengthen, and learn from emerging Jewish organizations that build community at the nexus of spirituality, learning, social activism, and culture.&#8221;  In other words, to help emerge American Judaism into what it will be next.<br \/>\nWe had a great lunch conversation about our respective ministries and passions, and Josh and Shawn even came to see the show that night in Granada Hills!
