A waitress at a caf\u00e9 in Pennsylvania says a man ordered a stromboli for about $13 but left a tip for $3,000 as part of the \u201cTips for Jesus\u201d movement, which started about nine years ago. Mariana Lambert, a waitress at Alfredo\u2019s Pizza Caf\u00e9 in Scranton, spoke to the media last week, narrating how she experienced the generosity.<\/p>\n

She said she relies on tips to make a living and was shocked and happy to see a customer leave her a $3,000 tip last month. She told the local news station, \u201cIt really meant a lot to me because everyone\u2019s going through stuff. It really touched my heart. I still can\u2019t believe it. I\u2019m still in shock.\u201d<\/p>\n

The generous tipper was identified as Eric Smith, who doesn\u2019t live in the area but travels to various places, leaving tips like the one he left Mariana as part of the social media trend called \u2018Tips for Jesus.\u2019<\/p>\n

Lambert said she would also now give a little extra tip when she goes out to eat, saying, \u201cI know how it feels when you come in, and even if you can get a little bit extra. It really means a lot.\u201d She added that she\u2019d use the money to pay some bills and maybe take her family on vacation.<\/p>\n

In 2015, Clint Spotleson, who worked as a bartender at a restaurant called Crudo in Phoenix, Arizona, received a combined\u00a0$11,000 tip<\/a>\u00a0on two separate bills totaling just over $419.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first one he just filled out and left on the table,\u201d Spotleson said, according to \u00a0The Arizona Republic<\/a>. \u201cThen he was like, \u2018You know, I\u2019ll have another round,\u2019 Then the second one, he was like, \u2018Let\u2019s have fun with this one.\u2019 And he said to his friend, \u2018Put 10K on this one.\u2019 And she was like, \u2018OK.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Spotleson said he split the tip with another bartender on duty, the kitchen staff, and a cocktail server and planned to use his portion to help him fix his car. The customer was alleged to be former PayPal Vice-President Jack Selby, who had a home in nearby Paradise Valley and was outed the previous year as the man who runs the popular\u00a0Instagram\u00a0<\/a>account called Tips for Jesus.<\/p>\n

On the Instagram account, pictures are posted of the tips that Selby leaves, which he is said to usually tip between 250% to 600% of the bill when he dines out. The account has over 75,000 followers.<\/p>\n

In 2017, The New York Post\u00a0confirmed<\/a>\u00a0that Selby was behind the Instagram account. \u201cSelby was spotted at Upper West Side bar Guyer\u2019s, run by romance novel cover model Cindy Guyer, over the weekend ordering just over $100 in drinks \u2014 but he left a $5,000 tip.\u201d<\/p>\n

It started in September 2013 at a bar in Ann Arbor, Michigan, after a college football game. The tipper, who was sipping his $1.90 coffee at the time of the interview, told the magazine. He said he and his friends had long been tipping generously, but they decided to leave a $3,000 tip on an $87.98 check and post a photo of the receipt to Instagram that afternoon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
