President Trump’s core support base is evangelical Christians, but according to his former lawyer Michael Cohen, Trump has disrespected them on more than one occasion. Evangelicals, who make up one in four Americans, were credited with helping Trump win the White House with 80 percent voting for Trump in 2016.<\/p>\n
In Cohen’s new book, “Disloyal: A Memoir”, he claims that Trump mocked and disrespected a group of evangelical leaders after they laid their hands on him and prayed.\u00a0 This occurred in Trump Tower meeting right before the 2016 election. At one point in the book, Cohen claims Trump said “Can you believe that bulls\u2013t? Can you believe people believe that bulls\u2013t?\u201d<\/p>\n
Cohen continued, “The cosmic joke was that Trump convinced a vast swathe of working-class white folks in the Midwest that he cared about their well-being. The truth was that he couldn\u2019t care less.”<\/p>\n
It’s not entirely clear which meeting Cohen is referring too, but there is speculation that it was a meeting with conservative Christain leaders in New York City in June 2016. It was a private event.<\/p>\n
Trump is a self-described Presbyterian, though is not known for being very religious. The support has mystified many as Trump’s behavior and language can feel very un-Christian-like. However many evangelical Christians have been pleased with his decisions for Supreme Court justices and blocking funding to Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n
Further in the book, Cohen calls his former boss “a cheat, a liar, a fraud, a bully, a racist, a predator, a conman” with the mentality of a “mob boss”. The White House has already responded, saying “Cohen is a disgraced felon and disbarred lawyer, who lied to Congress. He has lost all credibility, and it’s unsurprising to see his latest attempt to profit off of lies.”<\/p>\n
