A 2,000-year-old ring bearing the name of Pontius Pilate is getting a fresh interpretation \u2014 and researchers say it could help explain a detail in the biblical account of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion.<\/p>\n

The ancient copper-alloy ring was discovered at Herodium, a fortress in the Judean desert, during excavations in the 1960s. It remained in storage for decades before researchers published details about it in 2018.<\/p>\n

The ring bears an inscription associated with Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea who, according to the Gospels, authorized Jesus’ crucifixion.<\/p>\n

Now, Catherine Bonesho, a UCLA professor of ancient Judaism, has offered a new interpretation of the inscription. In a study published in Palestine Exploration Quarterly<\/em>, Bonesho argues that its Greek letters represent a transliteration of the Latin “PILATO,” meaning “for Pilate” or “to Pilate.”<\/p>\n

That interpretation could help solve a longstanding mystery surrounding the artifact: Why would a powerful Roman governor own such a cheaply made ring?<\/p>\n

Bonesho believes he probably didn’t.<\/p>\n

Instead, the ring may have been used by a lower-status worker conducting administrative business under Pilate’s authority.<\/p>\n

“Understanding the ring gives us more insight into what the Roman administration of early Roman Judea looked like in terms of how authority was distributed into the lower echelons of the political structure,” Bonesho said.<\/p>\n

Candida Moss, a historian of early Christianity at the University of Birmingham, said that interpretation could also provide context for a detail found in the Gospel of John.<\/p>\n

John 19 records that Pilate had a notice prepared and placed on Jesus’ cross reading, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Although Scripture attributes the action to Pilate, Moss said a governor likely would have delegated the physical task to someone working under his authority.<\/p>\n

“I think the ring helps us understand why the Bible says that Pilate wrote the inscription that was put on the cross of Jesus, even though we know as historians that he couldn’t possibly have written it himself,” Moss said.<\/p>\n

“He delegated that work to someone else,” she added.<\/p>\n

The ring does not provide direct archaeological evidence about Jesus’ crucifixion or prove who physically prepared the inscription placed on the cross. Instead, researchers say it offers a glimpse into how Pilate’s authority may have operated through lower-ranking officials.<\/p>\n

Nearly 2,000 years later, that administrative detail may help modern readers better understand why an action performed on Pilate’s orders could simply be recorded as something Pilate himself did.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
