One of summer\u2019s most spectacular sky shows is about to reach its peak, with dozens of shooting stars expected to streak across unusually dark skies this week. But the Perseid meteor shower also carries a centuries-old Christian connection that many skywatchers may not know.<\/p>\n

The Perseids are expected to peak overnight Wednesday into early Thursday, giving people across much of the Northern Hemisphere one of the best opportunities of the year to see meteors flash across the sky. The shower reaches its expected maximum at 10:53 a.m. ET Thursday, making the hours before dawn an ideal time to watch.<\/p>\n

This year could offer particularly good viewing conditions. The Perseids are peaking around a new moon, meaning there will be little moonlight to wash out the meteors. Under dark, clear skies, observers in rural areas of the northern United States could see roughly 30 to 50 meteors per hour. Under ideal conditions, the Perseids can produce even more.<\/p>\n

And this year, the meteor shower comes with an extraordinary celestial coincidence.<\/p>\n

A total solar eclipse will cross parts of the Northern Hemisphere on Wednesday, with totality visible from areas including Iceland, northern Spain and northeastern Portugal. A partial eclipse will be visible across a much wider region, including portions of the northern United States and Canada.<\/p>\n

The timing of the two events is so unusual that some people along the eclipse\u2019s path could potentially see Perseid meteors during totality, when the moon completely blocks the sun and briefly darkens the daytime sky.<\/p>\n

The Perseids occur every year when Earth passes through debris left behind by Comet 109P\/Swift-Tuttle. Tiny particles slam into Earth\u2019s atmosphere at tremendous speeds and burn up, creating the streaks commonly called shooting stars. The Perseids are especially known for producing fireballs, unusually bright meteors that can leave glowing trails across the sky.<\/p>\n

Humans have been observing the Perseids for more than 2,000 years. Somewhere along the way, however, the annual August spectacle also became intertwined with Christian history.<\/p>\n

In parts of Europe, the meteors became known as the \u201cTears of St. Lawrence,\u201d a reference to Saint Lawrence, a third-century Christian martyr whose feast day is celebrated Aug. 10, just as the Perseids typically approach their peak.<\/p>\n

Lawrence was a deacon in Rome who cared for the poor and helped oversee church resources. According to Christian tradition, Roman authorities ordered him to surrender the church\u2019s wealth. Lawrence instead presented the poor and suffering, declaring them the church\u2019s true treasures.<\/p>\n

Lawrence was executed in 258 during the persecution of Christians under Roman Emperor Valerian. Later tradition held that he was killed on a heated gridiron.<\/p>\n

As the story of his martyrdom spread, Christians began connecting the fiery streaks appearing in the August sky with Lawrence. The meteors were imagined as heavenly tears or glowing embers recalling his fiery death, giving rise to the name \u201cTears of St. Lawrence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, scientists know exactly what produces the Perseids, but the old nickname remains a fascinating link between an astronomical event and centuries of Christian tradition.<\/p>\n

Those hoping to catch the show should find the darkest location possible, away from city lights, and give their eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust. Look broadly across the sky rather than focusing on one spot. And if clouds get in the way during the peak, there\u2019s still time: Perseid meteors should remain visible for roughly another two weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
