Tennessee Pastor Greg Locke, who is under\u00a0federal investigation<\/a>\u00a0for allegedly misappropriating church funds, says his \u201ctent\u201d church, which drew up to 3,000 people in its heyday, is now down to a few hundred in the wake of his ongoing challenges.<\/p>\n

Despite the loss of in-person worshipers at his Global Vision Bible Church in Lebanon, Locke\u00a0said he’s been experiencing \u201cfreedom.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0reflective post on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0Thursday, Locke shared his struggle to maintain his status as a megachurch pastor and why he’s treating the changes in his ministry as a \u201cresurrection\u201d of sorts.<\/p>\n

There was a time when our ‘”tent” church shook with three thousand voices. A time when the parking lot looked like a city, when the altars stayed wet for hours, when deliverance was not a side ministry but the heartbeat of a global movement.<\/p>\n

We lived in the middle of that storm of favor, and it looked like success from every angle. But nobody tells you what it costs to keep the machine smiling. Nobody tells you about the low-grade panic that sits in your chest when you walk onto a stage that big and realize you are responsible for the emotional temperature of thousands of people who showed up expecting a show.<\/p>\n

Mega church can feel less like shepherding and more like performing for an audience that will leave the moment the production value drops or something brighter comes to town. And hanging over all of it is the heavy weight of the realization that your entire life will be judged by 30-second video clips taken out of context.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He then alluded to the challenges facing his ministry, including the nearly two-year federal investigation into alleged financial mismanagement that culminated in a\u00a0pre-dawn raid<\/a>\u00a0of his home by 50 to 60 federal agents on July 12.<\/p>\n

Locke told his congregation that agents used a battering ram to force entry around 6 a.m., roughly three weeks into a six-week sabbatical he had taken following\u00a0his son’s death<\/a>. The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that both the FBI and IRS participated in executing search warrants at Locke’s home and at his media company.<\/p>\n

People moved. People left. Trials walked through the front door and refused to leave. Internet slander became a full-time job for strangers who had never sat in our living room. Federal investigations, including a terrifying house raid. Multiple lawsuits. Bank accounts closed. Buildings at risk. Vandalism. Death threats. And then the blow that still takes the air out of my lungs when I say it out loud: the death of our son.<\/p>\n

Everything that could be shaken was shaken. The crowds thinned. The noise got quieter. The stage got smaller. And somewhere in the middle of the loss I discovered something I never expected to feel again. Freedom.<\/p>\n

We are pastoring a few hundred truly dedicated people now. Three hundred. Maybe four hundred on a strong Sunday. And I am not less happy. I am not less called. I am not less anointed. I am actually more free than I have ever been.<\/p>\n

The anxiety of managing the appearance of greatness is gone. The performance is over. What is left is a remnant that actually wants Jesus more than they want a production. A people who will stay when the lights are dim and the only thing left is the Word and the Spirit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While Locke insists that he and his family “have nothing to hide\u201d when it comes to the IRS probe, Justin Greenwell, a former pastor at Locke\u2019s church, claimed in an earlier interview with The Christian Post that Locke\u2019s leadership was problematic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no transparency in the financials of the church. Absolutely zero,\u201d he claimed to CP. \u201cThere were times where we were asked for there to be transparency; [he said] it was none of our business. It was, \u2018Well, if you can’t trust your pastor, then you don’t need to be here,’ kind of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greenwell said when it came to online donations, only Locke and his wife could see what was coming into the church.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody could see what was coming in. There was a period of time where he did allow certain staff members to count the offerings that came in on the in-house (collection), but once it hit the bank account, there was just, there was no transparency, and nobody knew where the money went,\u201d Greenwell said. \u201cWhenever I even talk to them and ask them about who our tax guy is, his wife was like, \u2018I do all of our taxes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
