A stunning Roman mosaic depicting a pagan river god has been uncovered in southern Turkey, just miles from where the Apostle Paul proclaimed the Gospel during his first missionary journey, offering a vivid reminder of the spiritual landscape early Christians encountered as the faith spread across the Roman world.<\/p>\n

The intricate mosaic was discovered by archaeologists at the ancient city of Aspendos, about 25 miles east of Antalya, according to Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The site sits just a short distance from Perga, the city mentioned in Acts 13:13 and Acts 14:25, where Paul and Barnabas preached during one of Christianity’s earliest missionary journeys.<\/p>\n

The newly unearthed artwork was found along Theater Street, an ancient road connecting Aspendos’ acropolis with its famed Roman theater.<\/p>\n

Dating to the early third century A.D., the mosaic once served as the floor of a large pool measuring roughly 20 by 25 feet. Archaeologists believe much of the structure remains buried, suggesting additional discoveries could still lie beneath the surface.<\/p>\n

At the center of the mosaic is Eurymedon, a youthful river god from Greek mythology. He is portrayed wearing and holding reed leaves while leaning against an amphora overflowing with water\u2014a traditional symbol of abundance, fertility and the life-giving power of rivers.<\/p>\n

Turkish officials say depictions of Eurymedon are exceptionally rare in ancient mosaic art, making the discovery particularly significant.<\/p>\n

“It is also especially significant because depictions of river gods are extremely rare in mosaic art,” Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said. He described the find as being of “great scientific importance” and said it provides valuable insight into Roman-era artistic traditions in Anatolia.<\/p>\n

For Christians, however, the discovery offers more than artistic or archaeological value. It provides a glimpse into the religious environment Paul encountered as he traveled throughout Asia Minor proclaiming Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

When Paul arrived in cities like nearby Perga, the region was filled with temples, idols and devotion to the gods of Greece and Rome. The worship of pagan deities shaped public life, politics and commerce throughout the Roman Empire. Yet it was into this setting that Paul boldly preached the message of Christ’s death and resurrection, calling people to turn from idols and worship the one true God.<\/p>\n

The juxtaposition is striking. While artisans were creating elaborate tributes to mythological gods like Eurymedon, the Gospel was quietly taking root in nearby communities through the ministry of Paul and the early Church.<\/p>\n

The discovery also underscores Turkey’s continuing importance for biblical archaeology. In recent months, archaeologists have announced several significant finds from the Roman and early Christian periods, including a 1,700-year-old Aramaic inscription that sheds light on Christianity’s rise and a Roman military hospital that was later converted into a Christian sanctuary.<\/p>\n

Although the newly discovered mosaic celebrates a forgotten pagan deity, its location near one of Paul’s missionary fields serves as a powerful reminder of Christianity’s triumph over the ancient world’s many gods.
