The video<\/a>, which has been viewed more than 774,000 times, shows a traveler preparing to enter a church in Italy by slipping a long skirt over a shorter dress and wrapping a scarf around her bare shoulders. The quick outfit adjustment allowed her to meet the dress requirements commonly enforced at many of Italy’s historic churches without changing her entire outfit.<\/p>\n

Many churches throughout Italy ask visitors to cover their shoulders and wear clothing that falls below the knees as a sign of reverence. Those who arrive dressed outside the guidelines can be refused entry, making preparation an important part of sightseeing for many travelers.<\/p>\n

Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman said the answer is straightforward: visitors should honor the customs of the places they choose to visit.<\/p>\n

“When it comes to visiting sacred places, either in our country or in another country, dressing respectfully and knowing the rules is an important leadership skill,” Gottsman told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n

She encouraged travelers to research local customs before arriving, noting that every culture has different expectations that can range from clothing standards to tipping etiquette.<\/p>\n

“The key is to know the rules in advance, which takes some investigation,” she said.<\/p>\n

For Gottsman, adding a scarf or another layer is about more than following a dress code.<\/p>\n

“Changing or adding layers of clothing to respect local customs is a gesture of kindness, thoughtfulness, decorum and goodwill,” she said. “Bottom line is to respect the dress code policy.”<\/p>\n

Many commenters agreed, applauding the traveler for finding a practical solution that balanced comfort with respect during Italy’s hot summer weather.<\/p>\n

“It is that simple to be respectful,” one commenter wrote.<\/p>\n

Another shared a similar experience, saying, “I carried a pretty scarf with me everywhere I went in Italy, and it was such an easy and stylish way to cover my shoulders.”<\/p>\n
