The proposal must receive another two-thirds vote at next year’s convention before officially becoming part of the SBC constitution.

The decision came at the close of the denomination’s two-day gathering, which drew more than 11,000 messengers from churches across the country for worship services, resolutions, sermons, and debates over theological and cultural issues shaping the future of the convention.

Supporters of the amendment argued the vote was about biblical faithfulness and doctrinal clarity.

“This is an opportunity for Southern Baptists to speak in truth, in unity, in conviction,” said SBC leader Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, who sponsored the amendment.

“There’s a great line that divides liberal and biblical evangelicalism, and you can see it on this very issue,” Mohler added. “The trajectory of liberal denominations is clear.”

The SBC already maintains a doctrinal statement — known as the Baptist Faith and Message — that opposes women serving as pastors. But advocates of the amendment said the denomination needed stronger constitutional language to remove confusion surrounding churches that allow women to preach or hold pastoral titles.

The proposed amendment specifically states that churches should be excluded from the convention if they “affirm, appoint, or endorse a woman serving in the office or function of a pastor/elder/overseer, specifically preaching to the assembled congregation.”

Though Southern Baptist churches govern themselves independently, the convention can determine whether a church is considered in “friendly cooperation” with the SBC. Churches that violate doctrinal standards can be removed from membership.

In recent years, the denomination has already expelled several churches over the issue, most notably California’s Saddleback Church after it appointed women to pastoral roles.

Wednesday’s debate on the convention floor was surprisingly brief, with little visible disagreement among messengers. The only significant opposition came from South Carolina pastor Doug Mize, who argued the amendment was unnecessary because the SBC already has systems in place to address churches with women pastors.

“What we have already works,” Mize said.

Still, convention leaders insisted clearer constitutional wording was needed to protect the denomination’s theological identity moving forward.

“We need constitutional clarity on this issue,” Mohler said.

The debate reflects a broader divide within Christianity over the role of women in ministry. Many mainline Protestant denominations ordain women to the pastoral office and to the episcopate, while more conservative groups maintain that Scripture reserves pastoral authority to men.

Southern Baptist leaders cite New Testament passages they believe limit the office of pastor to qualified men. At the same time, they emphasize that women play essential and valuable roles within the church.

Baptist Women in Ministry, an organization supporting women serving in ministry leadership, strongly criticized the vote.

“We express our solidarity with the women in ministry who have been harmed by this vote,” the organization said in a statement. “Women in ministry deserve affirmation, respect, and the opportunity to follow God’s call.”

Mohler pushed back against the idea that the SBC undervalues women, saying Southern Baptists hold a “pricelessly high view” of women and their contributions to the church, family, and society.

“I realize that in our egalitarian society, that runs against the grain,” he acknowledged.

The convention also addressed several other issues during the annual meeting. Messengers approved resolutions condemning political violence and hateful rhetoric, while also calling for humane treatment of immigrants alongside support for lawful immigration enforcement.

Delegates additionally passed a resolution denouncing antisemitic violence and conspiracy theories connected to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, while reaffirming the denomination’s commitment to evangelism.

The SBC also elected Florida pastor Willy Rice as its next president. Rice, senior pastor of Calvary Church in Clearwater, won 58% of the vote over South Carolina pastor Josh Powell. Both candidates supported the amendment on women pastors.

Rice received backing from influential conservative advocacy groups within the SBC that have argued the denomination must remain firmly committed to traditional biblical teachings on gender, family, and church leadership.

For many Southern Baptists, this week’s vote represented more than a procedural change. Supporters described it as a defining stand for biblical authority at a time when many denominations continue moving in more progressive theological directions.

The Southern Baptist Convention took a major step this week toward formally banning churches with women pastors, as thousands of delegates overwhelmingly voted to advance a constitutional amendment reinforcing that only men should serve in pastoral roles within the nation’s largest Protestant denomination.
