Pope Leo XIV is calling for strong global regulation of artificial intelligence, warning that unchecked AI development could threaten human dignity, jobs and even peace itself.<\/p>\n

In a sweeping new encyclical titled “Magnifica Humanitas” (“Magnificent Humanity”), the pope described artificial intelligence as one of the defining moral and social challenges of the modern age. The document marks the first major teaching text of Leo’s papacy and reflects the church’s growing concern about how rapidly advancing technology could reshape humanity.<\/p>\n

“Artificial Intelligence now demands to be disarmed, freed from logics that turn it into an instrument of domination, exclusion and death,” the pope said during a Vatican presentation of the document.<\/p>\n

Leo specifically criticized what he called a “culture of power” surrounding the AI race, especially in the development of advanced military technologies. He declared it “not permissible” to hand over irreversible life-and-death decisions to AI systems, arguing that humans must always remain morally accountable for such actions.<\/p>\n

The pope’s comments come as governments and technology companies around the world continue debating how aggressively AI should be regulated. While some leaders argue that fewer restrictions are needed to keep innovation moving quickly, Leo urged developers and political leaders to slow down and carefully consider the human consequences of their work.<\/p>\n

“It is not enough to invoke ethics in the abstract,” Leo wrote. “Robust legal frameworks, independent oversight, informed users and a political system that does not abdicate its responsibility are required.”<\/p>\n

Throughout the encyclical, the pope repeatedly warned against allowing too much technological and economic power to remain concentrated in the hands of a few corporations. He expressed concern that children, workers and vulnerable communities could suffer most if AI continues advancing without meaningful safeguards.<\/p>\n

The Vatican’s release of the document drew attention from leaders in both the technology industry and academia. Taylor Black, a Microsoft AI executive and director of the Catholic University of America’s AI institute, said the pope’s message speaks directly to deeper questions about identity and purpose.<\/p>\n

“It lends itself to people who are at the forefront of these tools and able to see the incredible things that they’re able to do, to have questions about their own ‘What does it mean to be human?'” Black said.<\/p>\n

The Vatican event also featured executives from Anthropic<\/a>, one of the world’s leading AI companies. Anthropic co-founder Christopher Olah welcomed the pope’s concerns and agreed that outside accountability is necessary as AI grows more powerful.<\/p>\n

“We need informed critics who will tell the labs when we are failing,” Olah said. “We need moral voices that the incentives cannot bend.”<\/p>\n

The pope also focused heavily on the dignity of human work, comparing today’s AI revolution to the Industrial Revolution addressed by Pope Leo XIII in the landmark 1891 encyclical “Rerum Novarum.” Leo XIV said the pursuit of profit should never come at the expense of human value.<\/p>\n

“The pursuit of greater profits cannot justify choices that systematically sacrifice jobs,” he wrote. “Because the human person is an end, not a means.”<\/p>\n

In some of the encyclical’s strongest language, Leo condemned the growing “normalization of war” through AI-powered military systems and remote warfare technologies. He argued that advances in modern weapons have made traditional ideas about “just war” increasingly outdated.<\/p>\n

The pope also issued a historic apology on behalf of the Catholic Church for its past role in legitimizing slavery through decrees that allowed European powers to enslave non-Christians centuries ago.<\/p>\n

Experts say “Magnifica Humanitas” could become one of the most influential faith-based responses yet to the rise of artificial intelligence. Paolo Carozza, a law professor at the University of Notre Dame and chair of Meta’s oversight board, called the document “profound and prophetic.”<\/p>\n
