Members of Shades Mountain Baptist Church were met with unexpected news when senior pastor George Wright announced his abrupt resignation, calling it “heartbreaking” for his family and asking the congregation for fervent prayer.<\/p>\n

In a video shared on social media<\/a>, Wright told the roughly 7,800-member church that his final Sunday sermon would come just two days after the announcement. While he did not provide specific reasons for stepping down, he said the decision had become clear over the past couple of weeks.<\/p>\n

“Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear to us that our time here at Shades is coming to an end,” Wright said. “Please pray like crazy.”<\/p>\n

The sudden nature of the announcement left many in the congregation searching for answers, but Wright was clear on one point\u2014his calling remains intact. “There is nothing in my life that disqualifies me from ministry,” he said, adding that he is “more passionate and committed right now to live out this purpose than I’ve ever been.”<\/p>\n

Wright has served as senior pastor since August 2021<\/a>, following his time at Shandon Baptist Church in South Carolina. He comes from a family deeply rooted in ministry; his father, Bryant Wright, previously served as president of the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest Protestant denomination.<\/p>\n

Church leadership sought to reassure members in a written statement accompanying the video, emphasizing stability and faith during the transition. “As a church, we trust that the Lord is guiding us,” the statement read. “Our leadership and staff are committed to walking through this season with care, unity and faith.”<\/p>\n

Even in his farewell message, Wright pointed the focus back to Christ, asking for prayers not only for his family and the church but for the surrounding community. He expressed a desire to see spiritual renewal continue, urging believers to pray “that revival would continue to break out.”<\/p>\n

He closed with a reaffirmation of his life’s mission: “To love and worship King Jesus by faithfully serving and loving my family, preaching God’s Word, and pursuing His mission all the days of my life.”<\/p>\n
