Allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse of power against Bickle surfaced in 2023, leading to investigations and widespread scrutiny of the ministry.

“For the sake of clarity, please know that of course I do not continue to endorse people like Mike Bickle … who have been caught in unrepentant immorality,” Chan said in the statement.

Chan acknowledged that his previous support of leaders who later proved untrustworthy may have contributed to the hurt experienced by believers.

“I know that my endorsements of leaders who have later fallen have added to the hurt and heartbreak experienced by the Body, and for this, I sincerely apologize,” he wrote.

The pastor also expressed regret over a 2021 comment he made defending Bickle. At the time, Chan had criticized those who distanced themselves from Bickle after hearing others’ concerns, calling them “so foolish.” Chan now says he recognizes that the remark may have discouraged people who had legitimate concerns.

“I see now that those words could have caused harm,” he acknowledged.

A separate statement from the elders of We Are Church — the network founded by Chan — also addressed the controversy. Elders Kevin Kim, Rob Zabala, Sean Brakey, and Joe Moore said Chan had no knowledge of the leaders’ hidden moral failures when he associated with or endorsed them.

However, they admitted that Chan’s public influence meant his words carried weight.

“Some of those statements unintentionally gave credibility to leaders who later proved deeply untrustworthy,” the elders said, apologizing for the confusion, hurt and loss of trust that followed.

The leaders also emphasized that protecting vulnerable people and confronting abuse must always take priority over defending reputations or institutions.

The controversy surrounding Bickle intensified after an independent investigation conducted by the firm Firefly released a detailed report outlining allegations of sexual abuse and manipulation. According to the report, Bickle used predatory tactics and spiritual influence to sexually abuse at least 17 females, including minors.

Chan said he first heard the allegations in 2023 and later traveled with pastor Sam Storms to confront Bickle in person. However, Bickle reportedly refused to meet with them.

Despite the painful revelations, Chan said he hopes the Church can learn from these failures and remain committed to truth, repentance and healing.

For Chan, the moment serves as a sober reminder that Christian leaders must handle influence carefully — and that humility and accountability remain essential for the health of the Church.

Pastor and bestselling author Francis Chan has issued a public apology, acknowledging that his past endorsements of Christian leaders who later faced scandal contributed to confusion and pain within the Church.
