After a year away from the pulpit following his admission of “falling short of God’s standard,” beloved pastor and author Dr. Tony Evans has been officially restored to ministry. Elders at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship (OCBF), the Dallas megachurch he founded nearly five decades ago, announced Sunday that Evans has completed a 12-month restoration process \u2014 though he will not return to a staff or leadership role at the church.<\/p>\n

During the service, associate pastor of outreach Chris Wheel told<\/a> the 11,000-member congregation that Evans had “fully submitted to the church’s discipline and restoration process,” which included counseling with outside professionals and pastoral mentoring.<\/p>\n

“We are pleased to report that Dr. Evans has fully submitted to the church’s discipline and restoration process,” Wheel said. “He demonstrated evidence of genuine repentance and godly sorrow, along with humility and a renewed desire to honor God.”<\/p>\n

Wheel emphasized that Evans’ journey followed a biblically grounded framework, citing Lamentations 3:22-23 and Galatians 6:1 as guiding scriptures for the elders’ decision.<\/p>\n

“Restoration when pursued with gentleness and self-awareness reflects the very character of Christ,” Wheel said. “Our desire has always been to handle this matter in a way that honors both truth and love.”<\/p>\n

A Year of Reflection and Renewal<\/h3>\n

Evans, 75, stepped down<\/a> in June 2024 after publicly confessing that he had “fallen short of the biblical standard” several years prior. Although he did not specify the nature of his sin, he made clear that he had not violated any civil laws.<\/p>\n

“The foundation of our ministry has always been our commitment to the Word of God as the absolute supreme standard of truth,” Evans said at the time. “When we fall short of that standard due to sin, we are required to repent and restore our relationship with God. \u2026 While I have committed no crime, I did not use righteous judgment in my actions.”<\/p>\n

He added that he shared his failure with his wife, children, and church elders \u2014 all of whom “lovingly placed their arms of grace” around him.<\/p>\n

His son, the Rev. Jonathan Evans, revealed<\/a> last year that the family learned of his father’s confession only days before the congregation did. “Three days [before the public confession], my dad would call us and tell us the exact same thing he told you. No more. No less,” he said during a 2024 Father’s Day sermon.<\/p>\n

Restoration Without Leadership<\/h3>\n

After months of counseling, mentoring, and accountability, the elders unanimously agreed that Evans showed clear evidence of repentance. However, they also decided he would not return to any official staff or leadership role at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship.<\/p>\n

“While he will not be returning in a staff nor leadership role at OCBF,” Wheel said, “we joyfully look forward to seeing how God uses Dr. Evans’ gifts and calling to proclaim the truth of Scripture with clarity and conviction for the strengthening of the body of Christ.”<\/p>\n

Following the announcement, elders prayed over Evans and shared communion to symbolize his restoration. He then joined his son on stage for a heartfelt conversation about the process.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Evans admired his father’s humility, telling him, “It’s one thing to watch you preach the Word. It’s another thing to watch you live under its authority even when it hurts.”<\/p>\n

“A Hospital of Restoration”<\/h3>\n

Evans admitted the past year had been “bittersweet.”<\/p>\n

“It’s certainly bitter when you’ve done something for 48 years \u2026 and then you’re no longer doing it. And it’s your fault. That creates a wound in your soul,” he said. “But I also understand that when you go through something, you have to relate to God in a deeper place.”<\/p>\n

He reflected on how OCBF’s restoration policy \u2014 which he helped establish years earlier \u2014 became the same framework for his own healing.<\/p>\n

“When it came my turn, I could not apply to others what I was unwilling to apply to myself,” he explained. “I had to submit to the very process I helped to install \u2026 because if we’re going to be a Bible church, that just can’t be a name. You’ve got to come underneath the Bible and the prescribed governance.”<\/p>\n

Evans likened the church to a “hospital of restoration.”<\/p>\n

“It’s one thing to see a sign that says emergency room. It’s another thing to have doctors and nurses and medicine on call when you need it,” he said.<\/p>\n

A Legacy Continues<\/h3>\n

While his season of public ministry at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship has come to a close, Evans expressed gratitude that his son would carry on the church’s vision.<\/p>\n

“Knowing that there was not just going to be an empty seat but a new chair \u2014 and that you would be sitting in it \u2014 made losing my chair manageable,” he told Jonathan.<\/p>\n
