Archaeologists have discovered two ancient churches in Kharga Oasis, an ancient settlement around 350 miles from Cairo. Kharga Oasis has been a site of significant finds. The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the find in a statement. The excavation at Kharga Oasis revealed a whole settlement, including ovens and large clay jars as well as burial sites and inscribed pottery. Some of the walls still have some plaster on them.<\/p>\n

The two churches discovered on the site are early Coptic churches, dating back as far as 1,500 to 1,600 years ago. The first church was larger with mudbrick walls and a large central hall with two side aisles. The church\u2019s large size is reminiscent of Christianity\u2019s impact in the 4th<\/sup> century, as it spread throughout Egypt. The second church was smaller and more modest in design, with a rectangular shape typical of early Christian churches. Its walls boasted intriguing Coptic inscriptions that offer insight of religious practices.<\/p>\n

Even more impressive, archeologists uncovered a wall with an ancient mural depicting Christ. The mural shows Jesus healing a sick person. Such depictions are incredibly rare, especially given its condition. Photographs have yet to be released of the mural at this time, possibly due to conservation concerns. The settlement highlights the cultural shift of Egypt from a predominantly pagan culture to Christian influence. \u201c[This discovery] sheds light on a significant era in the history of the Kharga Oasis, namely the beginnings of the Coptic period in Egypt. [It also reflects] the importance of Egypt\u2019s Western Oases as centers of religious and social life in different eras,\u201d a press release of the discovery noted.<\/p>\n

Other than its historical significance, Kharga Oasis. \u201cThis remarkable find not only deepens our understanding of early Christian history in Egypt but also paves the way for a new chapter in desert tourism,\u201d noted Travel and Tour World<\/em><\/a>. <\/em>As the country continues to unearth and promote its rich historical heritage, regions like the Western Desert are set to become new focal points for travelers seeking unique cultural and spiritual experiences. Kharga Oasis resides in a region not known for attracting tourists, but such a history-rich settlement could change that. Travel and Tour<\/em> theorized that the Egyptian government might invest in new tourist facilities and accommodations.
