One village in particular is using whatever tools they feel led to use, even if that means thinking outside the box. For priests, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">way <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outside the box.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Knock, Co. Mayo, Ireland, they are inviting hundreds of people from miles around to join them. The objective is that some will consider a higher calling as a priest, given a dire shortage in the countryside.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The kicker is that the human resources team of the Diocese is using social media to cast a wider net. Every effort is made to celebrate the opening of a facility at the historic Marian Shrine. Also known as the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knockshrine.ie\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knock Shrine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d the site is literally holy ground.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Knock,_County_Mayo#:~:text=According%20to%20Catholic%20beliefs%2C%20Mary,of%20evidence%20supporting%20the%20event.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catholic legend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph (as in Jesus\u2019 stepfather), and Saint John (as in John the Baptist) all appeared before numerous witnesses in Knock, Co. Mayo, in August 1879. Although there is little evidence to substantiate the sighting, the Knock Shrine remains a popular destination for Catholic Pilgrimages to this day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Knock Shrine\u2019s new facility was constructed with a younger demographic in mind. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/connacht\/2025\/0614\/1518450-knock-mayo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from regional publication RT\u00c9 News states that \u201ca \u20ac1.5 million investment has led to the construction of ten bespoke &#8216;eco pods&#8217;, which can accommodate visitors to the area.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To reach as many men in the 18 to 30 years of age demographic, Knock, Co. Mayo is leveraging a social media blitz to share news about the \u201cYouth Village\u201d that is not only state-of-the-art, but also environmentally friendly, with diverse use of \u201csustainable energy and offering a range of smart technology facilities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/world\/ireland-world\/article\/knock-priest-recruitment-drive-qx62b7qzf\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Irish Times<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Father Willie Purcell presents a different picture of the use of social media. Ireland\u2019s national vocations co-ordinator said that young people were \u201cbeginning to tire of the curated fa\u00e7ades being presented to them online.\u201d Purcell believes that these platforms are the indirect catalyst for a spiritual awakening among the same demographic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think there\u2019s a renewal of young people who are growing tired of this online generation,\u201d Purcell said. \u201cThey\u2019re in search of authenticity and can\u2019t find the answers to life\u2019s fundamental questions on social media or through AI [artificial intelligence].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Internet can be utilized for mass evangelism, the Church is returning to a more one-on-one, face-to-face approach for whatever marketing initially caught their attention. And, in some situations, they are utilizing the power of social media to achieve this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOver the past two years, there\u2019s been a strong increase in those seeking information on the priesthood,\u201d Purcell continued. \u201cThese are young men; some are in university while others are out working in different fields, so it\u2019s really right across the board.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding to be \u201call things to all men,\u201d as the Apostle Paul stated in 1 Corinthians 9:22, sometimes goes where they are instead of where you may want them to be. And, if they are online, go there to bring them offline and inside the church. This is not the first time the Catholic Church has attempted digital tactics to revive a traditional relationship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011, the Catholic Church in Ireland launched an app called \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2011-10-irish-church-app-would-be-priests.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vocations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d designed to help users reflect on their lives and determine whether a clerical life would be a good fit for them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, the Bishopric was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishstar.com\/news\/ireland-news\/irish-catholic-church-launches-priest-29858416\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back at it <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">due to the influx of most priests reaching retirement age. The familiar-sounding campaign was called \u201cA Year for Vocations.\u201d It attracted 56 people interested in considering the priesthood. The article shows that a campaign like that, decades ago, would have attracted \u201chundreds each year.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most recently, in April, a Philadelphia nonprofit launched <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thankapriest.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ThankAPriest.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, showcasing positive stories to attract younger Catholics to consider the priesthood as a calling and vocation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether social media is pushing young Catholics to stray from the world and run to the priesthood, or pulling them in for a recruitment campaign, one thing is clear: The Vatican needs more priests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aleteia.org\/2024\/04\/06\/vatican-reports-growth-in-numbers-of-faithful-while-priest-numbers-decline\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the Vatican showed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that last year, the number of Catholic adherents rose by one percent to 1.39 billion, but interest in new clergy has trended downward since 2012.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, is this \u201cKnock,\u201d \u201cKnock,\u201d Knocking on Heaven\u2019s Door? It depends on whether this recruitment marketing campaign works.
