A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/momentousrecoverygroup.com\/rehab-blog\/youth-and-addiction-a-statistical-deep-dive-into-the-next-generation-2025\/#:~:text=addressing%20the%20problem.-,Key%20Statistics%20on%20Youth%20and%20Addiction:,is%20here%20to%20guide%20you.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">November 2024 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uncovered between 34 and 39 percent of young adults aged 18-25 have used illicit drugs in the past 12 months. Pastors or evangelists are known to utilize current trends to make a point and win a soul for Christ.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if some religious leaders were using drugs to enhance their own spiritual experiences? It\u2019s their job to understand the Lord, so would it be surprising that psychedelics allowed clergy in various religions to \u201cfeel\u201d the Lord?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/psymed.2023.0044\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10-year-long study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from New York University (NYU) and Johns Hopkins, a litmus test of rabbis, priests, ministers and imams were recruited and researched <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cto take part in a research study of psilocybin and sacred experiences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Psilocybin is the leading ingredient in hallucinogens, particularly toadstools or \u201cmagic\u201d mushrooms, as they are called among psychedelic enthusiasts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In October 2015, NYU bought ads in Christian publications with the headline: \u201cSeeking Clergy to Take Part in a Research Study of Psilocybin and Sacred Experience.\u201d The objective of the recruiting class was for religious leaders who \u201chad an interest in further exploring and developing their spiritual lives.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each participant was given a \u201clegal 20-milligram dose of psilocybin\u201d one time and then sustained over 16 months. Following the first dose and study findings, participants took a 30mg dose of mushrooms. The caveat was that those taking psychedelics must be \u201cpsychedelically naive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers attached to this comprehensive study wanted to reduce stigmas toward \u201centheogens\u201d in \u201creligious spaces\u201d (i.e., churches, mosques, temples). The feared result of this study was generating nonchalant emotional and mental behavior toward psychedelic drug use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entheogen comes from two Koine Greek words: \u201centheos\u201d for divine and \u201cgenesthai\u201d for generate. In other words, these psychedelics or hallucinogens have a name meaning \u201cconnections to the inner divine.\u201d Coincidentally, \u201cpsilocybin\u201d is Latin for two different words: \u201cpsilos,\u201d meaning bare and \u201ckyb\u0113\u201d meaning <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">head. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All told, these magic mushrooms are meant to connect you to God somehow and feel it within your mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study&#8217;s findings among this focus group validate the etymologies. When asked how to describe the psilocybin experiences made them feel:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">96% said it was \u201camong the top five most spiritually significant\u201d moments in their lives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">92% considered it \u201cprofoundly sacred\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">83% found it to be \u201cpsychologically insightful\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">79% believed it was \u201cpsychologically meaningful\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">79% also strongly endorsed the \u201cexperiences had a positive effect on their religious practices\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">71% reported positive changes in their appreciation of religious traditions \u201cother than their own\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">42% ranked them as \u201cthe single most profound moment of [their] lives\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s been a long time coming,\u201d said William Richards, one of the studies architects, t<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2025\/06\/02\/after-a-decade-of-controversy-clergy-psychedelic-study-is-published\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o Religion News Service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt\u2019s a little like composing some musical composition, and the point comes where it\u2019s complete, and who knows what it does as people listen to it \u2026 It could pave the way for some very constructive things in the future in medicine and education and religion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not a new theory of mixing psilocybin and other psychedelics to heighten spiritual awareness. Historians believe it traces back to Mesoamerica and the Mazatec people of Oaxaca (known as the \u201cAztecs\u201d), which is approximately 221 miles east of Acapulco in central Mexico.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 1300 and 1521, the fall of the Mazatec Empire, Aztecs referred to psilocybin mushrooms as &#8220;teonan\u00e1catl,&#8221; meaning &#8220;flesh of the gods.\u201d They believed they helped in sacred ceremonies for divination, healing and a connection to the universe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James 4:8 states, \u201cDraw near to God, and He will draw near to you.\u201d Any relationship with the Lord is reciprocal, keeping us close to Him. Christ-followers do it through faith, prayer and a commitment to understanding God.
