In his first homily as pope, Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful message from the Sistine Chapel, cautioning against the modern tendency to reduce Jesus to just a “charismatic leader” or a “superman.”<\/p>\n

“There are many settings in which Jesus, although appreciated as a man, is reduced to a kind of charismatic leader or superman,” the 69-year-old pontiff declared. He warned that this perception is not only present among non-believers but also within the Christian community itself. “This is true not only among non-believers but also among many baptized Christians, who thus end up living, at this level, in a state of practical atheism.”<\/p>\n

Pope Leo XIV, formerly known as Robert Prevost, emphasized that seeing Jesus solely as an influential figure without truly recognizing His divinity and role as Savior leads to a shallow, ineffective faith. The newly elected pope urged believers to move beyond merely admiring Jesus to genuinely committing to Him as the risen Son of God.<\/p>\n

He stressed that such superficial faith results in a lack of genuine transformation, leading to what he described as “practical atheism.” This mindset, Leo asserted, is evident in areas of life marked by the absence of mercy, a loss of purpose, and the crisis of family values.<\/p>\n

“Precisely for this reason, they are the places where our missionary outreach is desperately needed,” Leo said, expressing his desire for the Church to reach out to those caught in this mindset. He spoke of how a lack of faith often brings about societal wounds, including neglect of human dignity, family crises, and a pursuit of fleeting pleasures.<\/p>\n

During his homily, Leo XIV did not shy away from addressing the modern challenges facing Christianity. He pointed out that in today’s world, the Christian faith is sometimes considered “absurd” or outdated, particularly when contrasted with society’s preference for technology, wealth, power, and success.<\/p>\n

“Even today, there are many settings in which the Christian faith is considered absurd, meant for the weak and unintelligent. Settings where other securities are preferred, like technology, money, success, power, or pleasure,” the pope stated.<\/p>\n
