CM reader Kathy wrote of the subtle but vicious power struggles within the leadership of her metaphysical church. You don&#8217;t need the particulars. But something tells me her sentiments aren&#8217;t all that uncommon, since religious institutions&#8211;like families and companies&#8211;are <em>organizational systems<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I put out love, and it didn&#8217;t reach its target. The whole situation&#8230;ruined the church for me. I didn&#8217;t want to infect other parishioners with my negativity,&#8221; Kathy writes.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m happy to report, Kathy, that just a week before you wrote, I learned of the work of the late <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0898620597\/qid=1146769140\/sr=1-1\/ref=sr_1_1\/104-7638272-0731123?s=books&amp;v=glance&amp;n=283155\" target=\"_new\">Rabbi Edwin H. Friedman<\/a> whose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alban.org\/Magazine.asp\" target=\"_new\">Alban Institute<\/a><br \/>still helps clergy apply the theories of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Family_systems_therapy\" target=\"_new\">family systems therapy<\/a> to leadership struggles within churches and synagogues. Peter L. Steinke, one of Friedman&#8217;s prot\u00e9g\u00e9s, wrote a fascinating book in 1993 that you might enjoy called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1566991102\/sr=8-1\/qid=1146623248\/ref=sr_1_1\/104-7638272-0731123?%5Fencoding=UTF8\" target=\"_new\">&#8220;How Your Church Family Works: Understanding Congregations as Emotional Systems.&#8221;<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>This book has great chapter headings, such as &#8220;What Shall it Profit a Parish if it Gets over the Hump but Falls Into the Abyss?&#8221; and &#8220;Do Not Go Gently Into That Glob of Glue.&#8221; It is healing to know that experts are out there addressing these questions and that you will, in time, use your experience to find a suitable spiritual home that will uplift and inspire you.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;padding-bottom:0.25em\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I asked you to send me your spiritual quandaries, and got some fine ones.
