With so much out there promoting the opposite, it&#8217;s a contrarian idea that may just catch on. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s called, simply enough, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyrecord.com\/article\/20100927\/UPDATES01\/100927016\/Yo++Jersey++Rutgers+wants+you+to+be+nicer+\">Project Civility<\/a> and it will feature lectures and other programs aimed at helping students discover the joys and benefits of simply being nice to other people. The idea apparently being, and I believe it, that people who are nice to other people tend to be happier than the snippy, the snarky and the nasty. <\/p>\n<p>The project will begin with a presentation by P,M. Forni, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilityinstitute.com\/\">The Civility Institute at Johns Hopkins University<\/a> based on his book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brianrwright.com\/Coffee_Coaster\/03_Book_Reviews\/2009\/090427_Choosing_Civility.htm\">Choosing Civility: The Twenty-Five Rules of Considerate Conduct.<\/a>&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>Quickly they include: <\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<ol>\n<li>Pay attention\n<\/li>\n<li>Acknowledge others\n<\/li>\n<li>Think the best\n<\/li>\n<li>Listen\n<\/li>\n<li>Be inclusive\n<\/li>\n<li>Speak kindly\n<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t speak ill\n<\/li>\n<li>Accept and give praise\n<\/li>\n<li>Respect even a subtle &#8220;no&#8221;\n<\/li>\n<li>Respect others&#8217; opinions\n<\/li>\n<li>Mind your body\n<\/li>\n<li>Be agreeable\n<\/li>\n<li>Keep it down (and rediscover silence)\n<\/li>\n<li>Respect other people&#8217;s time\n<\/li>\n<li>Respect other people&#8217;s space\n<\/li>\n<li>Apologize earnestly\n<\/li>\n<li>Assert yourself\n<\/li>\n<li>Avoid personal questions\n<\/li>\n<li>Care for your guests\n<\/li>\n<li>Be a considerate guest\n<\/li>\n<li>Think twice before asking for favors\n<\/li>\n<li>Refrain from idle complaints\n<\/li>\n<li>Accept and give constructive criticism\n<\/li>\n<li>Respect the environment and be gentle\n<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t shift responsibility and blame<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div align=\"left\">Even more quickly: <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.cc\/matthew\/7-12.htm\">&#8220;Do unto others have as you would have others do unto you.&#8221; <\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s hope this one&#8217;s a trend &#8212; that spreads to the media and society as a whole.
