{"id":37,"date":"2010-08-06T04:56:18","date_gmt":"2010-08-06T04:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/catholicsmediaandculture\/2010\/08\/reality-show-featuring-ryan-and-tatum-oneal-is-a-really-bad-idea.html"},"modified":"2010-08-06T04:56:18","modified_gmt":"2010-08-06T04:56:18","slug":"reality-show-featuring-ryan-and-tatum-oneal-is-a-really-bad-idea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/catholicsmediaandculture\/2010\/08\/reality-show-featuring-ryan-and-tatum-oneal-is-a-really-bad-idea.html","title":{"rendered":"Reality show featuring Ryan and Tatum O&#8217;Neal is a really bad idea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the worst sub-genres of the oxymoronically named genre known as reality television is the &#8220;follow the D-list celebrity&#8221; category. <\/p>\n<p>Comedian Kathy Griffin&#8217;s Bravo show is actually called <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kathy_Griffin:_My_Life_on_the_D-List\"><i>My Life on the D List<\/i><\/a> in which evidence is compiled on a weekly basis as to why she made the cut.&nbsp; Other reality show D-listers (often fading celebrities who were once higher on the fickle Hollywood scale of fame) have included the late <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Anna_Nicole_Show\">Anna Nicole Smith<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/02\/09\/kirstie-alleys-big-life-t_n_454920.html\">Kirstie Allie<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Breaking_Bonaduce\">Danny Bonaduce<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hogan_Knows_Best\">Hulk Hogan<\/a> and the ensembles featured each season on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Celebrity_Rehab_with_Dr._Drew\"><i>Celebrity Rehab<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the frantic race reach the absolute depths of voyeurism it really has become hard to rise above or, rather, sink below the competition but<i> <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Endemol\">Endemol USA<\/a>,<i> <\/i>the company that has given us such reality &#8220;classics&#8221; as <i><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_Brother_%28TV_series%29\">Big Brother<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gay,_Straight_or_Taken%3F\">Gay, Straight or Taken<\/a> <\/i>and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kid_Nation\"><i>Kid Nation<\/i><\/a>, is taking a good try with a new D-list show it is currently shopping to the networks.<\/p>\n<p>Called <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1118022557.html?categoryid=14&amp;cs=1\">Lost and Found<\/a>, <\/i>the proposed show will feature actor Ryan O&#8217;Neal and his estranged actress daughter Tatum as they attempt to reconcile after Tatum moves into her father&#8217;s Malibu home. <\/p>\n<p>Now, don&#8217;t get me wrong. I hope Ryan and Tatum work out their differences and rebuild their relationship (just like I root for the gang on <i>Celebrity Rehab <\/i>to get clean and Kirstie Alley to lose weight), I just don&#8217;t think they need to (or should) be subjected to the counterproductive strains of constantly rolling cameras and Neilsen ratings. If they&#8217;re sincere in their efforts to heal their rift, I urge them to do it in private. <\/p>\n<p>Just over a year ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Farrah_Fawcett\">Farah Fawcett<\/a>&#8216;s brave fight against cancer was captured on film for a documentary that aired on NBC. While I have no doubt Farah was sincere in trying to use the film <i>Farah&#8217;s Story <\/i>to convey a <a href=\"http:\/\/today.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/30750849\">positive message<\/a>, her death did take on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cy85oNeQbDQ\">show businessy stagemanaged quality<\/a> that was a bit unsettling to watch.<\/p>\n<p>And when her death on June 25, 2009 was essentially upstaged in the media by the same- day death of Michael Jackson (deemed the bigger star) the sad ending took on an ironic twist that a Hollywood scriptwriter would be hard pressed to match.<\/p>\n<p>The reality is Farah&#8217;s life and death was just as significant as Michael&#8217;s and no more so than the many other anonymous people who died that same day or any other day. Fame is not the measure of a successful life.<\/p>\n<p>And Ryan and Tatum&#8217;s hoped-for reconciliation will not be made more real because it&#8217;s the subject of a so-called reality TV show.&nbsp; Again, I&#8217;m rooting for them &#8212; but not their proposed show.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the worst sub-genres of the oxymoronically named genre known as reality television is the &#8220;follow the D-list celebrity&#8221; category.
