{"id":323,"date":"2011-04-18T10:40:24","date_gmt":"2011-04-18T14:40:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/catholicsmediaandculture\/?p=323"},"modified":"2011-04-18T11:12:47","modified_gmt":"2011-04-18T15:12:47","slug":"familyfaith-fare-wins-at-the-box-office-walmart-pg-and-nbc-continue-commitment-quality-family-programming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/catholicsmediaandculture\/2011\/04\/familyfaith-fare-wins-at-the-box-office-walmart-pg-and-nbc-continue-commitment-quality-family-programming.html","title":{"rendered":"Family\/faith fare wins at the box office; Walmart, P&amp;G and NBC continue commitment quality family programming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/movies\/article\/box-office-rio-grande-40m-scream-4-goes-quietly-193m-26532\">Family<em> &amp; <\/em>Faith films score at the box office.<\/a><\/strong> The numbers don&#8217;t lie.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/sites\/default\/sites\/73\/resize\/Box%20Office%20chart%20for%2004-17-11-400x418.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"418\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The success of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Bf6zeRwk5LE\">Rio<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HExP4izD358\">Hop<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soulsurferthemovie.com\/page\/the-movie.html\">Soul Surfer<\/a> <\/em>continue to point to strong audience demand for family-oriented and faith-themed entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>In its second weekend in release, <em>Soul Surfer, <\/em>the true story of a champion teen surfer who was sustained and inspired by faith after losing her arm in a shark attack, brought in another $7.4 million, bringing its two-week total fo $20 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAudience support is phenomenal,\u201d says AFFIRM Films Vice President Rich Peluso, adding \u201cTicket sales exceed expectations, and 96 percent of audiences rate it \u2018excellent\u2019 or \u2018very good.\u2019 That\u2019s a whole lot of families and teens having a great time at the movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>More family films coming to a TV near you, courtesy of P&amp;G and Walmart. <\/strong>Though Saturday&#8217;s Fox Network telecast of the partnership&#8217;s latest effort <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.familymovienight.com\/truth-be-told\/\">Truth Be Told<\/a> <\/em>failed to make a dent in the <a href=\"http:\/\/tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com\/2011\/04\/17\/tv-ratings-saturday-pirates-plunders-meagre-ratings-for-abc\/89719\">ratings<\/a>, the four previous films (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.familymovienight.com\/the-jensen-project\/\">Secrets of the Mountain<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.familymovienight.com\/the-jensen-project\/\">The Jensen Project<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.familymovienight.com\/a-walk-in-my-shoes\/\">A Walk in My Shoes<\/a><\/em> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.familymovienight.com\/change-of-plans\/\"><em>Change of Plans<\/em><\/a>) all did pretty well &#8212; well enough to inspire the ordering of five more films that will air on NBC.<\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The next movie, <em>Field of Vision<\/em>, is currently scheduled to air Saturday, June 11th on the Peacock Network. Other yet-to-be named films are set for August 6th and September 3rd (both Saturdays). As of now, the two remaining movies have not received air dates.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a thought. How about NBC just turn over Saturday night to P&amp;G and Walmart come fall and let them program the night with their family-oriented programming? <em>Secrets of the Mountain, The Jensen Project <\/em>and <em>A Walk in My Shoes <\/em>were all backdoor pilots and would make a pretty strong line-up &#8212; especially on a night which in recent seasons has been relegated to mostly airing reruns of hour-long crime dramas\u00a0 from the previous week. The night could also be used to run more P&amp;G\/Walmart family movie specials.\u00a0 The network would gain a cost-effective night of original\u00a0 programming. P&amp;G\/Walmart would gain a regular outlet for the films and series while also promoting their brands. Viewers would gain by getting a night of traditional television that the whole family could watch together.
