{"id":164,"date":"2011-02-03T05:18:12","date_gmt":"2011-02-03T05:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/catholicsmediaandculture\/2011\/02\/red-state-targets-a-violently.html"},"modified":"2011-02-03T05:18:12","modified_gmt":"2011-02-03T05:18:12","slug":"red-state-targets-a-violently","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/catholicsmediaandculture\/2011\/02\/red-state-targets-a-violently.html","title":{"rendered":"Faith, religion and the Sundance Film Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Sundancing around faith.<\/b> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/blogs\/firstthoughts\/2011\/02\/02\/religion-at-the-sundance-film-festival\/\">Writing in First Things<\/a>, Anthony Sacramone makes some excellent points about how the presentation of faith and religion has changed over the years.<br \/>Citing an article in the <a href=\"http:\/\/theenvelope.latimes.com\/news\/la-et-sundance-faith-20110127,0,6727068.story\">LA Times<\/a> about faith-themed movies screened at Robert Redford&#8217;s Sundance Film Festival, Sacramone notes how movie makers have gone from giving us faith-inspired movies like 1943&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Song_of_Bernadette_%28film%29\"><i>The Song of Bernadette<\/i><\/a> and 1944&#8217;s Academy Award-winning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UZ-clrkwsGM\"><i>Going My Way<\/i><\/a> to the list of faith-themed (if not inspired) films screened at this year&#8217;s Sundance (a name, BTW, which calls to mind Native American religion). <br \/>On paper at least, they appear to be the product of a much more cynical age than the one that brought movies like <i>Bernadette <\/i>and characters like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reelviews.net\/php_review_template.php?identifier=2158\">Father O&#8217;Malley<\/a>. Most of them, that I&#8217;m aware of, don&#8217;t sound particularly concerned with inspiring audiences to seek solace in religion.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.moviefone.com\/2011\/01\/25\/higher-ground-review-sundance\/\"><b><i>Higher Ground<\/i><\/b><\/a> &#8211; Based on <em>This Dark World, <\/em>Carolyn Biggs&#8217; memoir of <i>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/backstage.blogs.com\/blogstage\/2010\/06\/vera-farmiga-directing-higher-ground-now-casting.html\">one woman&#8217;s immersion into Fundamentalist faith and her decision, 20 years later, to leave it all behind.&#8221;<\/a><\/i><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/sundance.slated.com\/2011\/films\/theledge_sundance2011\"><b><i>The Ledge<\/i><\/b><\/a> &#8211; described as a ticking-clock thriller about a suicidal man that leads to an exploration of the true meaning and faith and forgiveness. The film, reportedly with <a href=\"http:\/\/theenvelope.latimes.com\/news\/la-et-sundance-faith-20110127,0,6727068.story\"><i>&#8220;understanding rather than judgment,&#8221;<\/i><\/a> warns against <i><a href=\"http:\/\/theenvelope.latimes.com\/news\/la-et-sundance-faith-20110127,0,6727068.story\">&#8216;&#8221;the consequences of a too-literal<br \/>\ninterpretation of religious texts.&#8221;<\/a><\/i>&nbsp; I&#8217;d actually like to see this one. &nbsp; <br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.moviefone.com\/2011\/01\/24\/red-state-review-sundance\/\"><b><i>Red State<\/i><\/b><\/a> &#8211;&nbsp; Writer\/director Kevin Smith&#8217;s story of a violent and homophobic pastor.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/01\/25\/us-reviews-film-salvationboulevard-idUSTRE70O6UM20110125\"><b><i>Salvation Boulevard<\/i><\/b><\/a> &#8211; A dark comedy starring Pierce Brosnan as televangelist involved in a gun accident.&nbsp; <br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/film\/filmblog\/2011\/jan\/24\/tyrannosaur-paddy-considine-sundance-review\"><b><i>Tyrannosaur<\/i><\/b><\/a> &#8211; Writer\/director Paddy Considine&#8217;s film about an embittered alcoholic man (Peter Mullan) and his relationship with a Christian charity shop worker. Of his film religious theme, Considine says <i>&#8220;I do think<br \/>\ntoo many people are worried about an existential thought instead of the<br \/>\nhere and now. They&#8217;re thinking &#8216;What do I do to get into heaven?&#8217;<br \/>\ninstead of asking, &#8216;What can I do to make my life better with my fellow<br \/>\nman?'&#8221;&nbsp; <\/i>(Considine actually has a bit of a point there but, on the other hand, positive faith enhances concern for other people. It would be nice to see that more often reflected in current movies.)<\/p>\n<p>However, if you&#8217;re really looking for old-fashioned movies with conservative values, Christian Toto <a href=\"http:\/\/bighollywood.breitbart.com\/cftoto\/2011\/02\/01\/romantic-comedies-an-oasis-for-conservative-movie-fans\/\">writing for Big Hollywood<\/a> suggests romantic comedies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sundancing around faith.
