{"id":135,"date":"2010-12-17T13:03:00","date_gmt":"2010-12-17T13:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/catholicsmediaandculture\/2010\/12\/the-parents-television-council-is.html"},"modified":"2010-12-17T13:03:00","modified_gmt":"2010-12-17T13:03:00","slug":"the-parents-television-council-is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/catholicsmediaandculture\/2010\/12\/the-parents-television-council-is.html","title":{"rendered":"Report says broadcast TV networks routinely sexualize young girls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Parents Television Council is out with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parentstv.org\/PTC\/news\/release\/2010\/1215.asp\">report<\/a> detailing what it says is a pattern of prime-time network TV shows fairly routinely airing content that sexualizes young girls, specifically between the ages of 12 and 17. <\/p>\n<p>According to PTC President Tim Winter, the report, entitled <font><font><font><font><i>Tinseltown&#8217;s New Target: A Study of Teen Female Sexualization on Prime-Time<br \/>\nTV<\/i>, demonstrates the industry&#8217;s <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><i><font><font><font>&#8220;<font>eagerness to not only objectify and fetishize young girls, but to sexualize them<br \/>\nin such a way that real teens are led to believe their sole value comes from<br \/>\ntheir sexuality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/i><font><font><font><font>Winter adds <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><i><font><font><font><font>&#8220;Storylines on the most popular shows among teens are sending the message to our<br \/>\ndaughters that being sexualized isn&#8217;t just acceptable, it should be sought<br \/>\nafter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/i><font><font><font>Researchers looked at 35 hours of programming involving 14 scripted series, including <i>The Office, NCIS, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, The Vampire Diaries, Grey&#8217;s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Lost, Family Guy, House, Glee, The Cleveland Show, American Dad, <\/i>and <i>The Simpsons.<\/i> <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that just because these 14 shows are among those studied they are not necessarily equal offenders or offenders at all. For instance, the report says <i>&#8220;Sixty-seven percent of the episodes involving sexualized scenes of underage girls were in a comedic genre (comedy dramas and\/or animated series).&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p><font>Among the study&#8217;s other major claims:<\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><font><font><font><font><i>\u2022 Underage female characters are shown participating in a higher percentage of<br \/>\nsexual depictions compared to adults (47% and 29% respectively). <br \/>\u2022 Only 5%<br \/>\nof the underage female characters communicated any form of dislike for being<br \/>\nsexualized (excluding scenes depicting healthy sexuality). <br \/>\u2022 Out of all the<br \/>\nsexualized female characters depicted in the underage and young adult category<br \/>\nfor the entire database, 86% were presented as only being of high school<br \/>\nage.<br \/>\u2022 Seventy-five percent of shows that included sexualized underage female<br \/>\ncharacters were shows that did not have an &#8220;S&#8221; descriptor to warn parents about<br \/>\nthe sexual content. <br \/>\u2022 Based upon a definition established by the American<br \/>\nPsychological Association of &#8220;healthy&#8221; vs. &#8220;unhealthy&#8221; sexuality, the study<br \/>\nfindings show that 93% of the sexual incidents involving underage female<br \/>\ncharacters occurred within a context that qualified as &#8220;unhealthy.&#8221; <br \/>\u2022 The<br \/>\ndata revealed that 98% of the sexual incidents involving underage female<br \/>\ncharacters occurred outside of any form of a committed relationship. <br \/>\u2022 The<br \/>\ndata show that 73% of the underage sexualized<\/i> incidents were presented in a<br \/>\nhumorous manner or as a punch line to a joke.<\/p>\n<p>To view a PDF of the entire report, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parentstv.org\/FemaleSexualization\/Study\/Sexualized_Teen_Girls.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><br \/><font><font><font><font><br \/><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><i><font><font><font><font>&nbsp;<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><font><font><font><font>&nbsp;<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Parents Television Council is out with a report detailing what it says is a pattern of prime-time network TV shows fairly routinely airing content that sexualizes young girls, specifically between the ages of 12 and 17.
