The Voyage of the Dawn Treader<\/i><\/a>, the new installment of C.S. Lewis’ <\/a>Chronicles of Narnia<\/a> <\/i>saga to hit theaters topped the domestic<\/a> and international<\/a> box office over the weekend. <\/p>\n

While its $24.5 million domestic take has been deemed “underwhelming” <\/i>by some analysts,   its $67 million international take may be harder to ignore. <\/p>\n

From the Hollywood Reporter<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Distributor 20th Century Fox said the third installment in the Chronicles
\nof Narnia<\/em> series based on the religion-infused novels of C.S.
\nLewis<\/strong> opened early last week at both 3D and conventional screens in
\nAustralia (where the latest Narnia<\/em> was shot), India and Spain largely
\nto take advantage of available 3D locations in those markets.<\/i><\/p>\n

Thus Dawn Treader<\/em>‘s international cume to date stands at $81
\nmillion. Globally, the cume is $105.5 million. Fox notes that the film has yet
\nto play such key offshore markets as Japan, China, Germany, Italy, Poland,
\nArgentina and the Scandinavian countries.<\/i><\/p>\n

The Walden Media\/Fox 2000 Pictures co-production, directed by Michael Apted,
\ntook the No. 1 spot in at least 32 markets on the weekend with Russia leading
\nthe list ($11.3 million generated from 1,284 venues). Mexico provided generated
\n$7.5 million, the third highest opening tally recorded by any Fox title.<\/i><\/p>\n

France came up with $5.5 million from 739 sites. South Korea provided $5.4
\nmillion from 493 situations while the U.K. — despite frigid weekend weather –
\nkicked in $4 million from 1,153 sites. Second weekend Australia market cume
\nstands at $5.66 million; Spain, $9.2 million; and India, $4.3 million.<\/i><\/p>\n

This being the Christmas season, good word of mouth can potentially provide strong legs that will further lift the movie into holiday blockbuster status. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
