I was hoping you and Richard would <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/castingstones\/2007\/10\/the-mullahs-problem.html\">tear each other\u2019s eyes out<\/a> for a few days before you made up.<br \/>\nOk, I admit that would have given me mixed emotions.  Since Richard has been a wonderful contributor to Beliefnet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/author\/author_34.html\">since 1999<\/a> and since you\u2019ve been a wonderful contributor <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jwalking\/\">in recent years<\/a>, I really would have been torn over who to root for.<br \/>\nBut now that you\u2019ve attempted to move the discussion past the personal toward the substantive, I guess I\u2019ll follow you there, too.<br \/>\nRichard, I think David\u2019s most important argument is that religious conservative leaders are less powerful than they used to be in part because the rank and file has seen what playing the political game has gotten them.  Not much, in David&#8217;s view.  In fact, he argues that it\u2019s harmed Christianity by giving a distorted view of Jesus&#8217;s message. In my opinion, the best evidence David offered on this was the absence of \u201cpoverty\u201d from the list of issues considered at the Values Summit. Wasn&#8217;t that <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jwalking\/2007\/10\/values-voter-summit-straw-poll.html\">pretty telling?<\/a><br \/>\nRichard, what say ye to that?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David, why\u2019d you apologize so quickly????
