If you are in a room filled with smiling people, I dare you to keep a straight face. \u00a0Lots of reasons to &#8216;put on a happy face&#8217;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Endorphins (feel good chemicals) are released.<\/li>\n<li>Cortisol (a stress hormone) is reduced.<\/li>\n<li>Smiling makes you more approachable.<\/li>\n<li>The more you smile, the more you will feel like smiling.<\/li>\n<li>Your body doesn&#8217;t know the difference between smiling for a reason and for no reason.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Back in 1963,\u00a0a now familiar piece of iconic artwork was created by an advertising professional named Harvey Ball. It became known as &#8216;Smiley&#8217;. A simple yellow circle with a drawing &#8230; two dots and an upswept swoop and two lines at each end. Throughout the 60&#8217;s and 70&#8217;s, it appeared on buttons and t-shirts. It showed up in parody form in the film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tOHr85z9k64\">Forrest Gump<\/a>. Because he never tradmarked the image, it became part of a campaign known as &#8220;Have a nice day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/worldsmileday\">World Smile Day<\/a> was launched in 1999 by Harvey Ball and honored on the first Friday in October. The motto is\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can you help someone smile and bring yourself to grin in the process?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Volunteer in your community<\/li>\n<li>Hold a door open for someone as you are walking into a store<\/li>\n<li>Allow someone in front of you in a check out line or out of a parking lot<\/li>\n<li>Compliment someone on their smile or what they are wearing<\/li>\n<li>Acknowlege something another person does to make life better<\/li>\n<li>Tell someone you love them<\/li>\n<li>Hug those close to you<\/li>\n<li>Encourage a child<\/li>\n<li>Hug strangers via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hugsacrossamerica.info\">FREE Hugs Events<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Prepare and bring meals to someone shut in or ill<\/li>\n<li>Give someone a gift of your time and energy<\/li>\n<li>Listen for the purpose of understanding, not to calculate a response<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.psychcentral.com\/about-relationships\/2016\/01\/cultivating-a-mentoring-culture\/\">Mentor <\/a>another<\/li>\n<li>Pick up litter<\/li>\n<li>Remind someone of their value<\/li>\n<li>Leave a love note<\/li>\n<li>Bring <a href=\"https:\/\/storiesforseniors.wordpress.com\/tag\/patricia-gallagher\">flowers<\/a> to people<\/li>\n<li>Pay for a beverage for the person behind you<\/li>\n<li>Encourage people&#8217;s dreams and visions for their lives<\/li>\n<li>If someone asks for it or is willing, pray with them<\/li>\n<li>Visit folks in hospitals and nursing homes<\/li>\n<li>Pay for a meal for someone who is on the street<\/li>\n<li>Write a poem and give it to someone<\/li>\n<li>If someone does something kind for you, pay it forward<\/li>\n<li>Be a hope broker<\/li>\n<li>Pay the toll for the person behind you<\/li>\n<li>Look in the mirror and smile<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And if this\u00a0doesn&#8217;t get you smiling, I&#8217;m not sure what will.
