Music is soul food for me. I not only listen\u00a0it for entertainment.\u00a0I\u00a0 immerse myself in it, splash around in it, roll in it, slurp it up. Angel <\/em>is the third sonic culinary creation by South Jersey based singer songwriter Lew Doty. Newly released at the time of year when people are more angelically aware, Angel<\/em> offers both soft-soothing melody and bouncy-dance-y tunes to which\u00a0I can imagine celestial beings bopping and swaying along. Doty’s velvet smooth voice reminds me of one of my favorite singers,; Nat King Cole.\u00a0We met\u00a0at a house concert at which he performed,\u00a0 in the 1990’s when he was musician in residence at\u00a0 The Center For Conscious Living in Moorestown, NJ. Although that is still his home base, he makes the rounds at other New Thought communities. It is as if the Divine is singing through him, using him as the proverbial ‘hollow reed’.<\/p>\n Doty’s spiritual practice and music\u00a0 are informed by the writings and teachings of Ernest Holmes\u00a0who was a\u00a0spiritual writer and teacher and\u00a0the founder of Religious Science, also known as “The Science of Mind.”\u00a0 To put it into perspective:<\/p>\n Science of Mind uses a five-step affirmative prayer called spiritual mind treatment. The five steps are:<\/p>\n 1. Recognition\u2014know that God is all there is.<\/p>\n 2. Unification\u2014know that you are one with God.<\/p>\n 3. Declaration\u2014state your word for the circumstance you want to manifest.<\/p>\n 4. Thanksgiving\u2014give thanks for your word being acted upon by the Law of mind.<\/p>\n 5. Release\u2014\u201cAnd so it is!\u201d<\/p>\n The CD presents God as a welcoming presence that has our Highest Good in mind at all times. As I listened to it in the car and at home, I felt comforted, inspired and challenged to move past my own limiting thoughts.<\/p>\n Angel<\/em> opens with the chant Day Becomes Me<\/em> <\/strong>which feels like a sunrise call and response that had me sighing and stretching to greet the day.<\/p>\n Day becomes me<\/p>\n Day becomes me<\/p>\n Day becomes me<\/p>\n I<\/p>\n become\u00a0the day<\/p>\n Peace becomes me (etc.)<\/p>\n Joy becomes me (etc.)<\/p>\n Day becomes me (etc.)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Humorous I Found The Buddha <\/em><\/strong>reminds the listener that The Buddha can be discovered anywhere, including the car, in a book and at the mall. The song invites releasing of selfish desires to be of ‘selfless service’ and express selfless love.<\/p>\n Sweetly sung Day Lily<\/strong><\/em> espouses the beauty that exists even if for just one day and that the memory of such exquisiteness is carried with us. With this song, Doty dares us to embrace change.<\/p>\n One With The Life of God<\/strong><\/em> is ushered in with percussion\u00a0\u00a0as it declares affirmatively, using what is said to be two of the most powerful words we can speak:<\/p>\n I Am<\/p>\n I am one with the life that creates this life,<\/p>\n I Am<\/p>\n I am one with the life that creates this life<\/p>\n I Am<\/p>\n I am one with the life that creates this life<\/p>\n I am one with the life of God<\/p>\n I am one with the mind that creates this mind (etc.)<\/p>\n I am one with the mind of God<\/p>\n I am one with the love that creates this love (etc.)<\/p>\n I am one with the love of God<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Dreamy I Become You<\/em><\/strong> is a close your eyes and sway as you imagine being one with all that is, no separation.<\/p>\n I can touch the sky<\/p>\n I can walk on water<\/p>\n I can taste the sun<\/p>\n I can touch you . . .<\/p>\n Can you touch me?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n How The World Is Changed<\/strong> is a New Thought primer with the lyrics:<\/p>\n I speak my word into the Law<\/p>\n The Law of Mind<\/p>\n The Mind of God<\/p>\n This is how the world is changed<\/p>\n This word is powered by belief<\/p>\n Belief in God<\/p>\n Belief in Me<\/p>\n This is how the world is changed<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Creation Chant<\/strong> invites the listener not only to dream and wish, but to put legs under their desires by focused intention, attention and action with a certainty that\u00a0a beneficial \u00a0outcome is assured.<\/p>\n If I set my mind to it,<\/p>\n And I speak my word into it,<\/p>\n Then I let my heart pursue it,<\/p>\n The Universe will do it<\/p>\n <\/p>\n My Beloved <\/strong>offers joyful juxtaposition and a recognition of seeming opposites as it states:<\/p>\n To gain the Power I release all power<\/p>\n To gain abundance I must give to receive<\/p>\n To gain intelligence I lose my mind<\/p>\n To see it clearly I must believe<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Grace of God<\/strong> is an invitation to the Divine to be companion along the path we all walk.<\/p>\n Oh, grace of God, follow me home<\/p>\n Oh, grace of God, follow me<\/p>\n Grace under fire<\/p>\n Gracing this heart of mine<\/p>\n Oh, grace of God, follow me home<\/p>\n Oh, grace of God, follow me<\/p>\n The song ends with a quote inspired by the\u00a0Bhagavad Gita<\/p>\n “O, Arjuna<\/p>\n Those who live in wisdom see themselves in all and all in them, who have renounced every selfish desire and sense craving tormenting the heart<\/p>\n Establish yourself in mindfulness and live free from lust, fear and anger<\/p>\n Throw down your sword and shield<\/p>\n For the war rages within!<\/p>\n Cast off the armor you, yourself have created<\/p>\n Grace<\/p>\n Mindfulness<\/p>\n Surrender . . .<\/p>\n are the only way home”<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
