I am never bored. When I was a child and would occasionally whine about feeling like there was nothing to do, my Bubbe (Yiddish for ‘grandmother’) would tell me, lovingly, of course…\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Geh shlog dein kup en vant”, which translates to “Go bang your head against the wall.”\u00a0 and then my mother would remind me that I could read, color, draw, ride my bike, play a game, go to the pool (if it was summer), roller skate, ice skate, sled (if it was winter), do chores (oh yes….loved that one:), bake cookies, listen to music, sing, dance, go to the park,\u00a0do some gardening, \u00a0take a walk,\u00a0 go\u00a0see a movie, \u00a0hang out with friends or my sister,\u00a0 volunteer (when I was in my teens, I worked at a local recycling center where we would bundle newspapers, sort and smash glass bottles and jars) watch tv (nearly last resort idea, since she wanted us to be active and not become couch potatoes). To this day, that serves me well as on the rare occasion when I am looking for something to do, it always finds me.<\/p>\n

I feel sad sometimes when I hear people say that they have nothing to do and no one with whom to do it. That doesn’t just apply to tv and video game addicted teens, but even folks my age. Take a moment to look around you, wherever you are. What do you see?\u00a0 Just four walls (if you are inside, of course) or seeds of ideas for stuff to do?\u00a0 As I look around the room I am in, I see some sorting and organizing that needs to be done. I see a few books to read that I will be reviewing. I peer out the curtains and see the sun streaming in and am eager to get outside and do some yard work. My body is\u00a0 stretching and reaching for the gym, knowing that I will feel great when I am finished my ‘playout’.\u00a0 This afternoon, I am looking forward to speaking with an old friend; Heidi Cooper who is\u00a0in from Colorado. She \u00a0is a talented\u00a0singer songwriter whose heart strings and guitar strings are intertwined. I am hosting a house concert with her on Friday night and she and another friend, named Cindy Greb and I are finalizing details for the event that will fill my home with music and friends. I haven’t seen her in ages and have a clear memory of two pivotal events. The first is her performing Bob Marley’s Redemption Song and the other is offering a baby blessing when her now teenage daughter Deanna was born. I am eager to reunite with both of them and co-create wonder and infinite fascination.<\/p>\n
