{"id":405,"date":"2013-10-16T22:51:26","date_gmt":"2013-10-16T22:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/blessingsabound\/?p=405"},"modified":"2013-10-16T22:52:28","modified_gmt":"2013-10-16T22:52:28","slug":"reclaiming-a-day-of-rest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/blessingsabound\/2013\/10\/reclaiming-a-day-of-rest.html","title":{"rendered":"Reclaiming a Day of Rest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I am tired today.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>When I looked back over my calendar, I\u2019m a bit aghast at all I&#8217;ve been doing.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>For two solid weeks, I was doing too much \u2013 every single day.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Most days in and of themselves were fairly manageable, but fourteen consecutive days of doing too much have wreaked a bit of havoc with my adrenals.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I need some rest and restoration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I know I am not alone in this.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Millions of us are working too hard and sleeping too little.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Millions of us are trying to do more than is easily accomplished.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Millions of us are working, plus taking care of a family, plus maintaining and cleaning a home, plus making meals, plus any number of other time-consuming tasks.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This \u201cbeing tired\u201d thing is endemic in our culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Whatever happened to a Day of Rest?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Those of us of the Christian or Jewish persuasion used to honor the Sabbath.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We used to figure if the Creator could rest after six days of major creative work, we should to.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>But somehow we have let that concept fall by the wayside.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I wonder why.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Do we think we are more capable than God of working without a break?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Do we believe ourselves to be superhuman?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I think we have forgotten the art of saying no.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We are taking our kids to soccer games on Sundays.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We are going to parties and picnics and barbecues on Sundays.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We are working through the weekend because our boss asked us to.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We are doing our shopping and our cleaning on Sundays because we can\u2019t seem to find the time to do it during the rest of the week.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>But even those of us who are not religious are surely allowed to have a real day off once a week.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It doesn\u2019t have to be on a Saturday or Sunday, any day would do!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A whole day off.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Now that sounds like a holy concept to me.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>A day in which we can stop working, stop doing, stop running around, stop using gas, just plain stop, period.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Mothers, too!<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Too often in the past, families would go to church or synagogue then everyone would mosey home to rest.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Except, of course, the poor woman of the household.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><i>She<\/i> would be expected to spend hours in the kitchen preparing a pot roast complete with mashed potatoes, vegetables, and dessert!<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Where was her day off?!!<span>\u00a0 <\/span>EVERYONE needs a day off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A day of rest helps restore us physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We cannot function well if we are drained.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We cannot make good decisions if we are exhausted.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We have trouble being kind if we are overworked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Let\u2019s allow ourselves a Day of Rest.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Every week.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s not just holy, it\u2019s smart.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am tired today.\u00a0 When I looked back over my calendar, I\u2019m a bit aghast at all I&#8217;ve been doing.\u00a0 For two solid weeks, I was doing too much \u2013 every single day.\u00a0 Most days in and of themselves were fairly manageable, but fourteen consecutive days of doing too much have wreaked a bit of&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":553,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[385,33,48,235,83,380,379,47,383,381,183,384,223],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-405","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-a-day-off","category-balance","category-busyness","category-creator","category-feeling-overwhelmed","category-overscheduled","category-overwork","category-rest","category-sabbath","category-saying-no","category-slow-down","category-tired","category-work"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
