{"id":168,"date":"2013-06-21T12:26:31","date_gmt":"2013-06-21T12:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/blessingsabound\/?p=168"},"modified":"2013-06-21T12:28:13","modified_gmt":"2013-06-21T12:28:13","slug":"the-blessing-of-grandparents-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/blessingsabound\/2013\/06\/the-blessing-of-grandparents-2.html","title":{"rendered":"The Blessing of Grandparents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[if !mso]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Something yesterday made me think of my grandparents.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>They\u2019re both on the other side now and I\u2019m sure they\u2019re watching me and guarding me and loving me as much as ever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">My grandparents were among the generation that still looked like grandparents.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>They didn\u2019t feel the need to look younger than they were.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>My grandmother always wore dresses (down to her knees, of course,) never pants.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>She wore glasses and curled her short gray hair in pin curls.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>She was plump (like any respectable grandmother back in those days.)<span>\u00a0 <\/span>She had rosy cheeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">My grandfather wore baggy trousers, never ever jeans.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>He often wore plaid shirts.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>On holidays he wore sweater vests.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>He had glasses and he was balding and he smoked a pipe.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>He was often sitting reading the paper, or Newsweek, or the Bible, which he would read from cover to cover, bless his heart, plowing through even Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/blessingsabound\/files\/2013\/06\/Probably-Grandpop-with-Dad.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-170\" alt=\"Probably Grandpop with Dad\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/354\/2013\/06\/Probably-Grandpop-with-Dad-194x300.jpg\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Grandpop &#8211; Harry Jamison Greb, with my father.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In his later years, Grandpop was cold even in the summer.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>He\u2019d even wear long johns under his pants.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Meanwhile, my grandmother suffered from the heat.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>In the hottest and most humid days of summer, she\u2019d walk around in her slip and she\u2019d have the air conditioner on.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I remember kissing many a sweaty cheek.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I can still picture beads of perspiration above her mouth.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>She always smelled of powder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">My grandmother taught me how to make jam.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I stood with her in the small steamy kitchen while she loaded the sugar into the strawberries cooking on the stove. (I couldn\u2019t believe how much sugar!)<span>\u00a0 <\/span>She loved her sweets.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I would watch, astounded, while she put teaspoon after teaspoon after teaspoon of sugar into her tea.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>And she always had a pretty dish with candy in it on the coffee table \u2013 usually the jellied, sugar-ccoated kind \u2013 like spearmint leaves or orange jellies.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It was for us, of course, but I\u2019m sure she enjoyed her share when we weren\u2019t there.<span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Grandmom always gave me something to take home every single time I visited.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It could be a plant, or some photographs, or something in the house that caught my eye.<span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Among my most cherished possessions are old photographs of ancestors which I\u2019d found in a big paper bag, and her diamond ring and wedding ring, which she left me in her will.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>(Diamond is my birthstone.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/blessingsabound\/files\/2013\/06\/ancestors-005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-171\" alt=\"ancestors 005\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/354\/2013\/06\/ancestors-005-300x189.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">They lived on Grandpop\u2019s social security check.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Grandmom, like most women of her generation, never worked outside the home.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>She cooked, cleaned, did laundry, and raised her children, but never knew the pleasure of a paycheck.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>They had three children and thirteen grandchildren.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Every birthday, we\u2019d get a card from them with five dollars in it.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It may seem like a minute amount, but for people with so little income, it was very sweet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/blessingsabound\/files\/2013\/06\/Doris-Christiana-Greb-with-Dad.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-169\" alt=\"Doris Christiana Greb with Dad\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/354\/2013\/06\/Doris-Christiana-Greb-with-Dad-187x300.jpg\" width=\"187\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">My grandmother, Doris Christiana Lunger Greb,<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">with my father.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>One of the things I loved about Grandpop was how he would often ask our opinions about things like world events or philosophical issues.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I felt respected when he would ask what we thought.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Also, I loved that he loved to garden and I loved that he would call us sometimes and say, \u201cGo outside right now.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s a gorgeous sunset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Whenever any of my siblings or I would go visit, Grandpop would always insist on driving us home afterwards, even though we lived only a quarter mile away.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>And we were young adults at the time!<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I know he was worried about our safety because it was a busy road, etc., but I always thought it was funny because of course we\u2019d all heard the stories of how far they had to walk to school when they were young.<span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">One of the best things about grandparents is: they have time.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>They have time to talk.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>They have time to play games.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>They adore spending time with their grandchildren.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>I spent hours playing games with my grandparents.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>And I never felt like I was bothering them.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I always felt appreciated, loved, treasured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Grandparents are such a blessing.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>And mine particularly so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I love you, Grandmom and Grandpop.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Thank you for everything!<span>\u00a0 <\/span>God bless you a million times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Something yesterday made me think of my grandparents.\u00a0 They\u2019re both on the other side now and I\u2019m sure they\u2019re watching me and guarding me and loving me as much as ever.
