BW3<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:16\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:16\">THE SOUND OF THE SOUL<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The sound of the soul<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At the speed of light<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Passed through my brain<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And into the night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Stifling silence<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sensing the sigh<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Feeling the longing<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Wanting to cry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The sound of the soul,<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Like a get away train<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Doppler effect<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Plaintive refrain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Listening intently<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Longing to know<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Who am I really?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And does it show?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The sound of the soul<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Like a voice in a well<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Echoing always<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Clear as a bell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tuning the instrument<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Assessing the tone<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Looking for harmony<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Searching alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The sound of the soul<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Out of the depths<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Heart cry towards heaven<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Wordless precepts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBy him we cry Abba\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Groaning within<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Awaiting adoption<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Release from all sin\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe Spirit assists us<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">With sighs double deep<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Interceding with Abba<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">My soul to keep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"border-style: none none solid;border-color: -moz-use-text-color -moz-use-text-color windowtext;border-width: medium medium 1pt;padding: 0in 0in 1pt\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"border: medium none;padding: 0in\">Jan. 7, 2006<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">THEOLOGICAL MUSINGS<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span>            <\/span>This poem, somewhat like \u2018Something Deep Inside\u2019 is an attempt to express the search for the ever illusive inner or true self.<span>  <\/span>Beyond all the facades, charades, and personas, there is a real self, created in the image of God.<span>  <\/span>The Greek philosophers of<span>  <\/span>course urged \u2018Know Thyself\u2019,<span>  <\/span>but from a Christian point of view this is a difficult task, not least because sin and self-centeredness impede the search.<span>  <\/span>Occasionally one gets a glimpse of the inner self, but it is fleeting, like the sound of a train going by, or the glimpse of the back of someone as they run by in haste.<span>  <\/span>One of the things I am suggesting in this poem is that the Holy Spirit who dwells within knows us better than we know ourselves, and not only can illuminate us on this and other subjects, but also can articulate for us what is really down deep inside, what our real heart\u2019s cry is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span>            <\/span><span> <\/span>I am also suggesting in this poem that there is an art or craft to getting to know one\u2019s self, and that beyond progressive sanctification and illumination by the Spirit there is also the need for us to hone our craft, be intentional about the odyssey of self discovery, not as if we should be like Narcissus staring into the pool at our own reflection, but rather seeking out the particular shape the image of God takes in us.<span>  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;line-height: 150%\">C.S. Lewis in his last, and some would say greatest literary work <u>Until We Have Faces <\/u>explores in depth what it means to become a whole self, and so to know one\u2019s self without posturing or personas. He intimates it is a painful journey to take off the masks and see ourselves as we really are.<span>  <\/span>And since we are complex beings we may well ask, which self.<span>   <\/span>Is it the public or the private self? Is the best self actually the real self, or only a pretender?<span>  <\/span>And since personality grows and develops, at least in its self-expression we may well realize that we are talking about a moving target here.<span>  <\/span>Indeed the New Testament suggests this very thing.<span>  <\/span>In texts like Romans 8.28-30 or 2 Cor. 3-4 it suggests we are gradually being transformed and conformed to the image of God\u2019s Son, a process that will not be completed until we reach the eschaton and we get our resurrection bodies.<span>  <\/span>Until then, we are always a work in progress.<span>  <\/span>Notice that according to Rev. 6 this is even true in heaven. The saints under the altar are cranky, crying out&#8212; How long?<span>  <\/span>They are given robes and the implication is they need to hush and be patient.<span>  <\/span>As Lewis would put it, we do not fully have faces until we face Christ in person. Short of that we need to regularly take stock, to face ourselves, realizing we see in a glass darkly at this juncture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:16\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center\" align=\"center\"><b><u><span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;color:red\">Spiritual Meditations<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;line-height: 150%\" align=\"center\">\u201cThe Sound of the Soul\u201d<\/h2>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in\" type=\"square\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><u>Lectio      Divina<\/u>:<span>               <\/span>2      Corinthians 3:4-18<span>     <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 0.25in\"><span style=\"color:red\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in\" type=\"square\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Conversation      can be a glorious spiritual discipline.<span>       <\/span>Schedule time to grab coffee or a meal with a friend (or friends)      and talk in broad strokes about your life and God\u2019s presence in it and      allow your friend(s) to do the same.<span>       <\/span>You might need to do this a handful of times to be sure that you      get the opportunity to truly reflect and respond to each other.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:red\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in\" type=\"square\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Confession      can really free us to discover our true selves.<span>  <\/span>By releasing our false selves through      confession, we are better able to live fre<br \/>\nely and joyfully in this      life.<span>  <\/span>Carve out some time this week      to confess (privately or with others) where you have not been true to the      image of God within you.<span>  <\/span>Ask God to      give you strength to see yourself as he sees you and to live into his      plans for your life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:red\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:red\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center\" align=\"center\"><b><u><span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;color:red\">Thoughts for Further Reflection<\/span><\/u><\/b><span style=\"color:red\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center\" align=\"center\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:red\">\u201c[T]he Holy Spirit who dwells within knows us better than we know ourselves, and not only can illuminate us on this and other subjects, but also can articulate for us what is really down deep inside, what our real heart\u2019s cry is.\u201d<span>                       <\/span>Ben Witherington III<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:red\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:red\">\u201cWe are dead without Him.<span>  <\/span>He must give us life. style=\"text-decoration: none\"> <\/span><\/span><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center\" align=\"center\"><b><u><span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;color:red\"><span Ponderings on \u201cThe Sound of the Soul\u201d<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size:16\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBodyText2\"><span>No modern writer has wrestled more honestly, openly, and beautifully about the interior life that the late Trappist monk, Thomas Merton.<span>  <\/span>A modern day mystic, Merton\u2019s brief life was a contemplative one.<span>  <\/span>The whole of his life was a quest for peace within himself and throughout the world.<span>  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><i><span style=\"color:red\"> <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><i><span style=\"color:red\">In <u>New Seeds of Contemplation<\/u>, Merton speaks of the necessity of silence, solitude, and prayer.<span>  <\/span>He purports that it is only in these practices that we discover our true selves.<span>  <\/span>This meant life as a monk for Merton, but he believes that the discovery of self through the contemplative is not only possible for others, but also vital for abundant life in the here and now.<span>  <\/span>Merton writes, <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><i><span style=\"color:red\"> <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 0.5in\"><i><span style=\"color:red\">\u201cOur discovery of God is, in a way, God\u2019s discovery of us.<span>  <\/span>We cannot go to heaven to find Him because we have no way of knowing where heaven is or what it is.<span>  <\/span>He comes down from heaven and finds us.<span>  <\/span>He looks at us from the depth of His own infinite actuality, which is everywhere, and His seeing us gives us a new being and a new mind in which we also discover Him.<span>  <\/span>We only know Him in so far as we are known by Him, and our contemplation of Him is a participation in His contemplation of Himself.<span>  <\/span>We become contemplatives when God discovers Himself in us.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><i><span style=\"color:red\"> <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><i><span style=\"color:red\">This journey to discovering what Merton calls the \u201ctrue inner self\u201d can only be reached when we dig deep within, listening for the voice of God within.<span>  <\/span>It is an awakening of sorts, but one we cannot attain on our own.<span>  <\/span>We only discover God when we lose ourselves and allow God to find us.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/post-create.g?blogID=11840313#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\" title=\"\"><span class=\"MsoFootnoteReference\"><span><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span Witherington has written over thirty books, including The Jesus Quest and The Paul Quest, both of which were selected as top biblical studies works by Christianity Today.
