{"id":1248,"date":"2010-11-12T09:17:13","date_gmt":"2010-11-12T09:17:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/2010\/11\/caesarea-maritima--the-provincial-headquarters.html"},"modified":"2010-11-12T09:17:13","modified_gmt":"2010-11-12T09:17:13","slug":"caesarea-maritima-the-provincial-headquarters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/bibleandculture\/2010\/11\/caesarea-maritima-the-provincial-headquarters.html","title":{"rendered":"Caesarea Maritima&#8211; The Provincial Headquarters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of my very brief four the BBC,&nbsp; I managed to have a few hours catching up with the latest at Caesarea Maritima, where we now can find an amazing ocean front hippodrome (no its not where they race hippos!&#8212; hippus means horse).&nbsp; Caesarea was the seaport that Herod built from scratch, so that his country would in fact have a port, and it later became the provincial headquarters for the province of Judea, rather than Jerusalem being that.&nbsp; It is here were Pilate and Festus and Felix as the proconsuls of the province lived.&nbsp; It was here where Paul was incarcerated with Luke attending for two years. This first shot shows it from the main entrance to the harbor, look at the top left of the picture, and the second aerial shot shows it better. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/Israel%20132.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Israel 132.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/137\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/11\/Israel%20132-thumb-400x225-19105.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-none\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/caesarea.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"caesarea.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/137\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/11\/caesarea-thumb-400x400-19107.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-none\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div>The Romans, naturally enough, expanded what Herod had originally designed. Here is a schematic of the Roman blueprint, so to speak. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/plan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"plan.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/137\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/11\/plan-thumb-400x601-19109.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-none\" width=\"400\" height=\"601\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div>There has indeed been found evidence of Pontius Pilate&#8217;s presence here. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/Pilate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pilate.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/137\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/11\/Pilate-thumb-400x272-19111.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-none\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div>The nature of incarceration in this place would be that the prisoner, who was only in a holding pattern until justice was served, would have had to provide for himself. Carmel to find a source of &#8216;living water&#8217;. <br \/><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/aqueduct.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"aqueduct.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/137\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/11\/aqueduct-thumb-400x266-19117.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-none\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/Israel%20117.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Israel 117.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/137\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/11\/Israel%20117-thumb-400x225-19119.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-none\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/Israel%20120.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Israel 120.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/137\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/11\/Israel%20120-thumb-400x225-19121.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-none\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div>We know the legions built this aqueduct because they left their trademark, their symbol with their legion number built right into one of the middle of one of these arches. <br \/><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/Israel%20130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Israel 130.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/137\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/11\/Israel%20130-thumb-400x225-19123.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-none\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div>There is so much more to see, including Herod&#8217;s theater, where, according to Josephus, Herod Agrippa was struck down by God for trying to display himself as a god walking on the earth&#8212;- Epiphanes. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/theater.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"theater.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/137\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/11\/theater-thumb-400x299-19125.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-none\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><\/span>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>One of the constant challenges of Biblical archaeology is how much to reconstruct, and how much to leave the ruins in ruins. As you can see, there is a lot of reconstruction at Herod&#8217;s theater, not least so plays and musical performances can be held there.&nbsp; But alas, much of the ancient look of the theater has been lost.&nbsp;
