The picture immediately above is of the Torah shrine portion of the synagogue (built after the NT era) which attests to the social status and economic wherewithall of some Jews in Sardis. What is even more interesting is how this synagogue is right next to the mammoth gymnasium. Jews had managed to blend in quite well with, in some case even syncretize their religion or praxis with, the dominant Greco-Roman culture. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/Bble%20Lands%202010%20397.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mt-image-none\" alt=\"Bble Lands 2010 397.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/137\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/06\/Bble Lands 2010 397-thumb-500x888-15306.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"888\" \/><\/a><\/span>The evidence of the influence of Rome is everywhere (see the ancient Roman bridge used as part of a modern bridge and the temple of Artemis refurbished by Rome).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n<span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/Bble%20Lands%202010%20393.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mt-image-left\" alt=\"Bble Lands 2010 393.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/137\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/06\/Bble Lands 2010 393-thumb-500x281-15293.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/Bble%20Lands%202010%20399.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mt-image-none\" alt=\"Bble Lands 2010 399.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/137\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/06\/Bble Lands 2010 399-thumb-500x281-15300.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n<span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\">Notice how Christians are blamed in this sign&nbsp;(below)&nbsp;for the decline of paganism, when in fact paganism was already in decline in various places long before Constantine.
