{"id":975,"date":"2011-11-02T07:44:41","date_gmt":"2011-11-02T11:44:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/?p=975"},"modified":"2011-11-02T07:47:54","modified_gmt":"2011-11-02T11:47:54","slug":"snooze-to-lose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/beyondgorgeous\/2011\/11\/snooze-to-lose.html","title":{"rendered":"You Snooze, You Lose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes you gain weight when you lose sleep.\u00a0 Will sleeping more help you drop the pounds?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/files\/2011\/11\/207166_10150566829270537_758175536_18018906_565319_n1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-976\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/261\/2011\/11\/207166_10150566829270537_758175536_18018906_565319_n1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Maybe.\u00a0 First there is the relationship between the hunger hormone ghrelin and the fullness hormone leptin that we looked at yesterday.\u00a0 When you are sleep deprived, your body produces more of the \u201ceat\u201d hormone and less of the \u201cstop already\u201d one.<\/p>\n<p>And then there is just a natural response to that tired feeling that usually hits with a bang in the middle of the afternoon after a sleepless night.<\/p>\n<p>You are so tired that you are teetering on the edge of a crash &#8212; but you have a long way to go before bedtime.\u00a0 So what do you do?\u00a0 You get a cup of coffee or a soda and find something sweet or salty to snack on.\u00a0 The high-glycemic snacks give you a sugar rush and you have a temporary burst of energy.\u00a0 But then you have a big insulin dump, and then you REALLY crash.\u00a0 Back to the refrigerator, or the vending machine.<\/p>\n<p>If this is a common scenario for you, you end up with extra pounds.<\/p>\n<p>Sleep specialists say we need an average of seven and a half hours of sleep a night.\u00a0 If you get around that and start sleeping a half hour more, it probably won\u2019t make you drop ten pounds.<\/p>\n<p>If, however, you get about five hours a night and start sleeping seven hours or so, it could make a dramatic difference in your journey to a healthier weight. \u00a0Your hormones will balance out as they should and you won&#8217;t get the killer &#8220;eat attacks&#8221; in the afternoon, so you are able to stick to your healthy eating plan.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes you can\u2019t help having a short night.\u00a0 People with small children who keep them up and folks afflicted with insomnia would much prefer to be snoozing.\u00a0 But, it would pay for most of us to do what we can to get a good night\u2019s sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Eating to live and living for Christ,<\/p>\n<p>Susan Jordan Brown<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes you gain weight when you lose sleep.\u00a0 Will sleeping more help you drop the pounds?
