<\/a>\u201cHow many of you believe that I can walk across Niagara Falls on this tightrope?\u201d he asked the people gathered there.<\/p>\n\u201cWe believe you can do it!\u201d they shouted.<\/p>\n
So the guy got up on the rope and started across the falls.\u00a0 Far, far, below he could see the water thundering down the cliff.\u00a0 If he fell, it would be instant death.\u00a0 Fearlessly, he kept walking \u2013 all he way across Niagara Falls and back.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow, do you believe that I can walk across this tightrope pushing a wheelbarrow?\u201d he asked the enthusiastic crowd.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, yes! You con do it,\u201d they screamed.<\/p>\n
So the tightrope walker took his wheelbarrow and effortlessly pushed it across the slippery wet rope high above the water.<\/p>\n
The crowd went wild, clapping and cheering.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow,\u201d the man said, \u201cFor my most dangerous trick.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to push someone in my wheelbarrow across Niagara Falls.\u00a0 How many of you believe I can do it?<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, we believe you can do it!\u201d the crowd shouted.<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay,\u201d said he said.\u00a0 \u201cWho will be my first volunteer?\u201d<\/p>\n
Total silence.\u00a0 Everyone believed that he was able to do it \u2013 but they didn\u2019t believe to the point of trusting their lives into his hands.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t believe enough to get into his wheelbarrow.<\/p>\n
Can you guess why I\u2019ve told you his story?\u00a0 It\u2019s because this lesson is about faith.<\/p>\n
Is faith just believing something is true?\u00a0 No, it\u2019s more than that.\u00a0 It\u2019s believing to the point of surrendering your life.\u00a0 Faith isn\u2019t just knowing that Jesus is the son of God \u2013 that He lived a perfect life and died on the cross for the sins of His people.\u00a0 It\u2019s more than knowing \u2013 it\u2019s believing to the point of trusting you life to Jesus.<\/p>\n
Once when Jesus was with his disciples, Peter had an opportunity to learn about faith.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure it was a lesson he never forgot.\u00a0Jesus had been speaking for hours to a huge crowd of people.\u00a0 At last He sent them away and told the disciples to take the boat across the Sea of Galilee.\u00a0 He went by Himself to a mountain to pray.<\/p>\n
Late that night a storm came up.\u00a0 A strong wind blew and giant waves\u00a0 tossed the little boat around as if it were a toy boat.\u00a0 The disciples were afraid they would sink \u2013 and then something happened that made them forget about the storm.Out on the waves they saw a person \u2013 and that person wasn\u2019t in a boat.\u00a0 He was walking on the water.<\/p>\n
\u201cAaaah \u2013 It\u2019s a ghost,\u201d they cried in terror.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t be afraid,\u201d Jesus said, \u201cIt is I.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIs that really you, Lord?\u201d\u00a0 Peter called out.\u00a0 \u201cIf you are really Jesus, tell me to come to you on the water.<\/p>\n
\u201cCome,\u201d Jesus said.<\/p>\n
With his eyes on Jesus, Peter climbed out of the boat and stepped into the raging sea.\u00a0 He stood up \u2013 he was doing it!\u00a0 He was walking on water, too!<\/p>\n
Then as he was walking, he took his eyes off Jesus and looked at the waves shipped high by the howling wind.\u00a0 He began to be afraid and started sinking into the water.<\/p>\n
\u201cLord, save me!\u201d he cried out.<\/p>\n
Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught Peter.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, you of little faith \u2013 why did you doubt?\u201d Jesus asked him.<\/p>\n
Peter\u2019s answer isn\u2019t in the Bible \u2013 but I think we can figure it out.\u00a0 He doubted because he took his eyes off Jesus.\u00a0 He looked at the waves and began to wonder whether Jesus really was the Son of God.\u00a0 Did Jesus really have power over the storm?\u00a0 Suddenly Peter wasn\u2019t really sure.\u00a0 He started sinking because He lacked faith.<\/p>\n
Sometimes we are like Peter.\u00a0 It\u2019s one thing to believe that Jesus is God and that He can protect us and guide us in the right way.\u00a0 It\u2019s something else when we believe it to the extent that we surrender our lives to Him.<\/p>\n
Yet, that\u2019s what faith is \u2013 it\u2019s taking ourselves out of our own keeping, and entrusting ourselves into His keeping.\u00a0 If He says to go \u2013 we go.\u00a0 If He says to speak \u2013 we speak.\u00a0 We don\u2019t worry about what will happen to us, because we are His and it\u2019s His business to protect us.\u00a0 That\u2019s what true faith is all about.<\/p>\n
When we read in the Bible, \u201cFor God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should hot perish but have everlasting life,\u201d we see Jesus talking about the surrendering kind of belief.<\/p>\n
Believing in Jesus and trusting His sacrifice to save you \u2013 surrendering you life to Him \u2013 that\u2019s what salvation is all about.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just praying a prayer, or going to church.\u00a0 It\u2019s giving up to God.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s getting into Jesus\u2019 wheelbarrow.<\/p>\n
Do you have that kind to faith?\u00a0 Or are you like the crowd who believed the man could push that wheelbarrow across the Falls \u2013 but wouldn\u2019t get on and ride.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t really believe, did they?\u00a0 Do you really believe in Jesus?<\/p>\n
