{"id":765,"date":"2013-03-27T03:54:25","date_gmt":"2013-03-27T07:54:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/?p=765"},"modified":"2012-12-14T06:45:26","modified_gmt":"2012-12-14T11:45:26","slug":"how-do-you-know-when-to-stop-eating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/beyondgorgeous\/2013\/03\/how-do-you-know-when-to-stop-eating.html","title":{"rendered":"How Do You Know When to Stop Eating?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWe asked 150 Parisians how they knew they were through with dinner,\u201d food psychologist Brian Wansink, PhD, said.\u00a0 \u201cThey said, \u2018When we\u2019re full.\u2019\u00a0 When we asked 150 Chicagoans that they said, \u2018When the plate is empty.\u2019\u201d *<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/261\/2011\/09\/FiestaDinnerMain.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-768\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/261\/2011\/09\/FiestaDinnerMain.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a>No wonder 2\/3 of American adults are overweight and half that number is obese.\u00a0 We don\u2019t stop until the food is gone!<\/p>\n<p>If we are to get our eating under control, we need to learn to listen to the cues our body is giving us and get out of the habit of eating as long as the food holds out.\u00a0 Here are some ideas for eating on purpose instead of mindlessly.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you don\u2019t need to eat it &#8212; don\u2019t buy it!\u00a0 Yes, you are buying it for visiting grandkids, but who is really going to eat it?\u00a0 Offer the kids an apple, instead.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t buy large, economy sized anything &#8212; especially not chips and candy.<\/li>\n<li>Eat only in the dining room or kitchen.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t read, watch television, or get on the computer while eating.\u00a0 Just eat.<\/li>\n<li>Eat with a fork.<\/li>\n<li>Take small bites.<\/li>\n<li>Chew your food.<\/li>\n<li>Make a vegetable tray or fruit the most accessible food in the kitchen.
