{"id":591,"date":"2013-03-05T03:08:51","date_gmt":"2013-03-05T08:08:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/beyondgorgeous\/?p=591"},"modified":"2012-12-14T05:31:58","modified_gmt":"2012-12-14T10:31:58","slug":"lose-the-fat-save-the-bones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/beyondgorgeous\/2013\/03\/lose-the-fat-save-the-bones.html","title":{"rendered":"Lose the Fat &#8212; Save the Bones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are things you don\u2019t want to lose when you are losing weight.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it would be smarter to think in different terms &#8212; not losing weight, but <em>reorganizing<\/em> it.\u00a0 Let\u2019s take another peek inside and see what our body looks like underneath the skin.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the bare bones &#8212; literally.\u00a0 Your bones are that important stuff that holds up everything else.\u00a0 Without bone you can\u2019t use your muscles, because muscles have to be attached to something to work. \u00a0\u00a0If you didn\u2019t have bone, you would be a puddle of stuff.\u00a0 It wouldn\u2019t be a living puddle, either, because your organs have to have a place to work and if you didn\u2019t have bones to hold you, your lungs couldn\u2019t breathe and your heart couldn\u2019t pump.<\/p>\n<p>The trouble with getting older is that we naturally start losing our bone density.\u00a0 That\u2019s a problem, because if our bones are fragile, they break more easily.\u00a0 A broken bone will definitely slow you down and keep you from living life to the fullest. And if you are afraid of breaking a bone, that will eliminate lots of activities, too.\u00a0 In severe cases, the bones are too weak to hold up the rest of the body.\u00a0 The organs cave in on themselves and quit working.\u00a0 The end.<\/p>\n<p>If you are losing bone density at a dangerous level, you have osteopenia. If your bones are already brittle and weak, you have osteoporosis. \u00a0You probably knew that &#8212; but did you know that losing weight can also cause you to lose bone density?\u00a0 That\u2019s why you want to concentrate on not just losing pounds, but losing fat.<\/p>\n<p>And losing fat is good for your bones. So how can you lose weight without harming your bones?\u00a0 Switching to a healthier, low glycemic diet and cutting out the things that weren\u2019t helping your bones anyway, like sugar and processed food, is a start.\u00a0 Walking also helps, so your step program is also good for your bones.<\/p>\n<p>Another big thing you can do to help preserve your bones?\u00a0 Quit drinking the sodas &#8212; diet or regular.\u00a0 I heard a doctor refer to it as \u201costeoporosis in a can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Supplements help, too.\u00a0 Glyconutrients have been proven in massive studies to improve bone density.\u00a0 Calcium, with Vitamin D3 helps, also.\u00a0 However, there are lots of calcium products out there that are a waste, because they are \u00a0synthetic or from shells or bones and your body can\u2019t absorb it.\u00a0 Plant source or dairy sourced is better.<\/p>\n<p>Often diets &#8212;\u00a0 especially the crazy ones &#8212; lead to bone loss.\u00a0 It\u2019s not worth it!\u00a0 Our goal is to lose fat, build muscle, and strengthen our bones.\u00a0 If we do that, we\u2019ll look better, but that\u2019s not really our goal.\u00a0 We\u2019ll be stronger, healthier, and able to live a fuller, more active life.\u00a0 That\u2019s better than gorgeous!<\/p>\n<p><em>Eating to live and living for Christ,<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Susan Jordan Brown<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are things you don\u2019t want to lose when you are losing weight.
